Installing Code Scalpel for Claude

Code Scalpel is an AI-powered code analysis tool available for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VSCode, and Cursor IDEs. This guide walks you through installation and integration.


Quick Start

Claude Code (terminal) — single command registers and auto-deploys:

claude mcp add codescalpel uvx codescalpel mcp

Then open claude in any project directory — Code Scalpel is immediately available.

Claude Desktop — start the MCP server directly:

uvx codescalpel mcp

Then add Code Scalpel to claude_desktop_config.json (see Claude Desktop Integration).


Installation Methods

UVX automatically manages the Python environment and dependencies.

Requirements:

Claude Desktop Integration

Step 1: Access Claude Configuration

Locate your Claude configuration file:

macOS:

Step 2: Add Code Scalpel to Configuration

Add Code Scalpel to the mcpServers section:

Step 3: Restart Claude Desktop

Close and reopen Claude Desktop to activate Code Scalpel.

Claude Code Integration

Claude Code is Anthropic's terminal-based AI coding tool (claude CLI). The claude mcp add command registers an MCP server globally — no manual config file editing required.

Step 1: Register Code Scalpel

claude mcp add codescalpel uvx codescalpel mcp

This single command:

  • Registers Code Scalpel as an MCP server named codescalpel
  • Uses uvx to auto-download and run the latest codescalpel package
  • Persists the registration globally across all Claude Code sessions
  • Makes all 23 Code Scalpel tools available immediately in the claude REPL

Step 2: Verify Registration

Expected output:

Step 3: Use in Claude Code

Open any project directory and launch Claude Code:

Project-Scoped Registration (Optional)

Step 1: Install Code Scalpel

Troubleshooting

Issue: "command not found: uvx"

Solution: Install UVX first

pip install uvx

Or use standard Python:

python -m code_scalpel.mcp.protocol

Issue: "No module named code_scalpel"

Solution: Install the package

pip install codescalpel

Verify installation:

Issue: Claude doesn't see Code Scalpel

Solution:

  1. Verify configuration file syntax (JSON is strict)
  2. Restart Claude Desktop completely
  3. Check error logs:
    • macOS: ~/Library/Logs/Claude/
    • Linux: ~/.local/share/Claude/logs/

Issue: "Connection refused" or timeout

Solution:

  1. Verify the MCP server is running:
    python -m code_scalpel.mcp.protocol --port 8080
    
  2. Check if port 8080 is available
  3. Try a different port in configuration

Issue: Memory or performance problems

Solution: Code Scalpel respects tier-based limits:

  • Community: 100 files, depth=3, 1 MB file size
  • Pro: unlimited files, depth=50, 10 MB file size
  • Enterprise: unlimited, 100 MB file size

Contact support to upgrade tier if hitting limits.


Issue: "Permission denied" on macOS/Linux

Solution: Make the script executable

chmod +x ~/.local/bin/codescalpel

Or use Python directly:

python -m code_scalpel.mcp.protocol
