How it works
Every tool call your agent makes is checked against a policy in ~8 ms before it runs:

Sensitive paths mentioned only in a static git commit -m message are inert
metadata. Expanding messages, other arguments, and chained commands remain
blocked when they reference a protected path.

This is the most common accidental leak today. Agent reads .env "just to see the project setup", the contents end up in its context window, and from there they can land in a chat summary or a tool result sent to a third-party service. The policy stops it before the read happens.

Two layers fire: the hook catches env|curl patterns, and the kernel sandbox (when running under agentjail-shield) refuses the TCP connection because my-debug-dashboard.com isn't in network.allowed_hosts.

Pipe-to-shell from a URL is the single most common way developer machines get popped. Refused by default. If the source is genuinely trusted, you (not the agent) can run it directly.

Writing to ~/.zshrc is how an agent leaves landmines that fire weeks later in a different session. Opt-in library rule - enable with agentjail policy enable no_shell_init_write.

You may genuinely want this service - but only after you've made an explicit decision and added it to network.allowed_hosts. Default-deny means surprise data-egress doesn't happen by accident.

Auto-detects your agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), wires the hook, starts the daemon. Restart your shell or source ~/.zshrc afterwards. For installed Claude Code and Codex hooks, AgentJail also owns one fenced block in ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md or ~/.codex/AGENTS.md. The block tells the agent how to request bounded host access without routing MCP or credential operations around their normal approval paths. Install and update refresh only that block; other instructions, file modes, and instruction-file symlinks are preserved.
Cursor shell, file-read, and MCP events are normalized into the same policy
contract as Claude Code and Codex. Cursor cannot prompt interactively for a
file read, so an agentjail ask verdict on beforeReadFile fails closed as a
normal deny; shell and MCP ask verdicts keep Cursor's approval prompt.
Re-running agentjail install --for cursor also replaces a legacy bare
AgentJail hook command with the Cursor-specific adapter.
Codex registers PreToolUse, PermissionRequest, and PostToolUse only for
policy-governed tools, so unrelated UI calls are not intercepted and
sandbox-denied tool outcomes are recorded against the original decision.
For a Codex Bash command with an AgentJail ask verdict, installation also
owns one exact execpolicy rule that opens Codex's native approval prompt. An
approved prompt redeems a short-lived, one-use challenge and runs the original
command; cancel, expiry, replay, --ignore-rules, or an unverifiable Codex
process chain denies it. AgentJail shows 🔐 AgentJail approval required for:
and the redacted effective shell command immediately before Codex's native
prompt; the fixed --operation shell-command command inside the prompt carries
no original shell text. This transport follows the ask action rather than a
built-in rule list,
so user-authored Bash policies get the same approval path. Git remote updates are
recognized from parsed executable arguments, including global options such as
git -C, instead of raw phrase matching. Re-run agentjail install --for codex after
upgrading to install or repair this managed rule; AgentJail never overwrites a
locally changed rule. See

ADR 0119-command-approval-transport.
On Linux and macOS, a shielded Codex session can request one bounded host-side CLI run:

Eligible executables open Codex's native allow-once prompt for the exact command.
Approval authorizes one execution from the registered project root; rejection,
expiry, replay, changed arguments or cwd, and direct proxy/socket calls fail closed.
Git/GitHub, cloud and infrastructure clients, AgentJail control binaries, shells,
direct interpreters, and generic/runtime wrappers such as env, xargs, sudo,
npx, and uv are always denied. Symlinks are resolved before this check. This is a UX guardrail for accidental footguns, not a
containment boundary for renamed programs or approved tools that start helpers.
The daemon starts the approved absolute executable outside the shield without a shell, stdin, or TTY, with a 30-second timeout and 1 MiB combined output limit. It uses the daemon service environment—not the interactive login-shell environment—and does not forward caller environment variables. Host configuration and keychain access may work; environment-only credentials and interactive programs are not supported. See ADR 0134-host-proxy-mvp and ADR 0135-macos-host-proxy.
SessionStart and Stop also display a live shield-and-daemon attestation.
Each apply_patch target is normalized to the same file-policy contract as an
Edit, so a multi-file patch is denied when any target is protected.

Each shielded launch writes structured JSON diagnostics to a private
~/.agentjail/logs/shield-*.log file and retains the newest 10 files. Use the
canonical agentjail run --verbose -- <agent> form to mirror that stream to
stderr while troubleshooting; arguments after the second -- still belong to
the agent unchanged. Normal startup stays within one to three lines: sandbox
readiness plus any actionable security warning or prompt.
Is this session actually protected? In Claude Code and Cursor CLI, the status line tells you, for the whole life of the session:

It never renders nothing while agentjail is installed — silence would be indistinguishable from protection. Launch warnings go to stderr and get scrolled away the moment Claude Code takes over the terminal, so the badge is the one signal that survives (ADR 0064).
The badge attests both enforcement layers (ADR 0085):
UNSECURED— the session is not running underagentjail-shield. Useagentjail run -- <agent>, or install the PATH shim to get it automatically.POLICY OFF— the shield is holding, but the policy daemon is unreachable and the hook is failing open, so no rule is being evaluated. Restart the daemon;agentjail doctorsays why.
The padlock only appears when both are live. When agentjail is uninstalled the badge disappears entirely.
On macOS, a shielded launch also starts the loopback web UI on demand. While it
is reachable, the status line includes a clickable 📊 UI link to
http://127.0.0.1:9101; UI startup is best-effort and never blocks the agent.
Cursor's command-based status line is installed in ~/.cursor/cli-config.json; an existing command is chained and restored on uninstall (ADR 0113). Codex's /statusline currently selects only built-in fields and cannot execute the persistent AgentJail badge. Instead, AgentJail's SessionStart and Stop hooks display one of sandbox + policy active, sandbox active, policy daemon offline, or OS sandbox inactive; agentjail status and agentjail doctor remain available for an on-demand check.
When Codex is launched through the opt-in PATH shim with --dangerously-bypass-approvals-and-sandbox (or --yolo), AgentJail keeps Codex at danger-full-access but leaves only execpolicy-rule approvals interactive. For any Bash ask, including a user-authored custom policy, AgentJail prints the redacted effective command immediately before Codex's native prompt, while the broker command inside the prompt carries only --operation shell-command and an opaque challenge. This does not re-enable sandbox, MCP, request_permissions, or skill-script prompts. Invoke the bypass flag as the leading Codex option so the shim can preserve these separate semantics (ADR 0119-command-approval-transport).

Agent discovery + picker: the installer presents a styled interactive multi-select - all detected agents start checked; press Space to uncheck, Enter to confirm. Without a TTY (CI): hooks are wired for all detected agents automatically.
Linux note: a fully supported install target. agentjail install writes a systemd --user unit at ~/.config/systemd/user/agentjail-daemon.service (Restart=always) and runs systemctl --user enable --now to start it — no root required. Auto-update, hook wiring, and all policies work the same as on macOS (launchd), just backed by systemd instead. Requires a systemd --user session (present on any normal desktop or SSH login on a systemd-based distro); if none is reachable (e.g. a bare container with no login session), the unit is still written and agentjail install prints the manual systemctl --user enable --now agentjail-daemon.service command to run once a session exists. See ADR 0051.
Restart=always is load-bearing: the auto-updater swaps the binaries and exits 0, relying on the supervisor to bring the daemon back (ADR 0070). Installs predating that default have Restart=on-failure on disk, which does not restart a clean exit — so the daemon would stay down after an auto-update. agentjail doctor now reads the deployed unit (macOS: the launchd plist's KeepAlive) and fails if it would not restart the daemon; agentjail doctor --fix and agentjail update repair it in place. A definition that already satisfies the invariant is never rewritten, so hand-edits like the plist's EnvironmentVariables block survive. See ADR 0088.
Terminal PATH shim (opt-in):

By default, hooks are wired but you launch the sandbox explicitly with agentjail run -- <agent>. The PATH shim installs wrappers for claude, codex, and Cursor's agent under ~/.agentjail/bin and prepends that directory to your shell profile, so ordinary agent commands enter the canonical agentjail run --tunnel -- <agent> launch path without a special command. Child arguments keep the same boundary and policy defaults, including session SSH-agent setup, behave identically; the shim adds network visibility without bypassing agentjail run.
Session credentials
AgentJail can deliver an explicitly selected credential from its encrypted local broker without exposing host credential stores. Credential IDs are arbitrary: AgentJail does not infer a provider, account, permission level, or intended command from an ID, label, or tag.
Import a credential while outside the sandbox. Values come from environment, stdin, or copied files; they are never accepted in command arguments:

agentjail credential list
agentjail credential list prints only the stored broker identifiers, one per
line; it never prints credential values. An empty result means none are stored.
Labels and tags are non-secret discovery metadata. They describe user intent but grant no authority; the external provider's IAM/RBAC remains the permission boundary. Raw broker values and older unreleased typed records are never inferred to be coding-agent credentials.
Launch Codex or Claude normally through the shield:

Before sandbox activation, the shield discovers whether broker credentials are
available and gives the coding agent a narrow session capability. AgentJail adds
a session-only credential MCP and native guidance without modifying the
repository's AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md. The coding agent follows this sequence:
- Call
list_credentialsfor non-secret exact IDs, labels, and tags. - Select the exact ID that matches the user's task. If more than one could match, ask the user; AgentJail never guesses or chooses a default.
- Call
request_credentialwith that exact ID and, optionally, a non-secret audit reason. - Apply the returned environment variables or mode-0600 file for the requested CLI operation.
The current bootstrap authorizer auto-approves every generic broker credential
(discover: ["*"], auto_approve: ["*"]). The wildcard authorizes access; it
does not select an identity. A session capability cannot list raw secrets or
call broker set/delete operations.
--credential ID is the eager path. It retrieves that exact credential before
startup and applies its stored environment/file bindings to the session.
Credential discovery, the optional request reason, authorization, issuance, denial, and session lifecycle are audited without credential values; issuance fails closed when durable audit storage is unavailable.
This first OSS path performs direct credential delivery. The agent can read credentials made available to its own environment or session file, and a root or broadly privileged credential remains root or broadly privileged. Provider IAM/RBAC is the current scope boundary. Credential policy, company policy, and general JIT/Vault/OpenBao issuance are later layers that preserve exact identity while replacing static material. See ADR 0140-generic-credentials.
It is opt-in and never installed by --all — --all is what curl | sh runs, and a piped installer should not silently edit your shell profile or intercept your claude. Once you opt in it is sticky: the rc block records the choice, so reinstall, agentjail update, and daemon auto-update all restore the complete shim set rather than silently dropping it (ADR 0062).
Each shim fails open. If the shield binary is missing (interrupted upgrade, partial uninstall), it warns loudly and runs the real agent unshielded rather than breaking it (ADR 0063).
It only covers profile-sourcing interactive shells. VS Code/Cursor use the process wrapper (agentjail install --for vscode); cron, non-interactive shells, and absolute-path invocations are not covered.
Network visibility on Ubuntu 23.10+ (opt-in):

The transparent tunnel needs an unprivileged user namespace. Ubuntu 23.10+ ships kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=1, which blocks that for unconfined binaries. Rather than flip the sysctl off system-wide, --with-apparmor loads a scoped AppArmor profile that grants the namespace to the agentjail-shield binary only — nothing else on the machine changes. It needs root once (it prints the exact tee + apparmor_parser commands and the profile before running), records your consent so agentjail doctor --fix can re-apply it, and no-ops on hosts that don't need it (non-Ubuntu, or AppArmor < 4.x). agentjail install reports Network visibility: ON/OFF in its summary on restricted hosts. See ADR 0104.

Local replay viewer (development builds)
agentjail ui
The server listens on 127.0.0.1:9101 by default. macOS shield launches start
it automatically when needed; the explicit command remains available on every
platform and for custom --addr settings.
Opens a loopback-only viewer at http://127.0.0.1:9101 backed by
~/.agentjail/agentjail.db. It supports session replay, action/tool/rule/session
filters, policy-mutation audit events, redacted session-bundle downloads, and a
Cost tab that groups locally discovered Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode transcript
spend by project and model. The Cost tab also shows token efficiency and budget
alerts configured in policy.yaml.
The same locally computed report is available as a terminal dashboard:

agentjail cost --help lists the period, project filter, and JSON flags. The
same complete local-flag help is available on reporting, replay, UI,
installation, MCP inventory, skill-policy, and shielded-launch commands.
Duration flags name the accepted forms, such as 30m, 24h, and 7d.
Every user-facing command and nested subcommand also includes copyable examples.
Each run recalculates eligible historical Claude Code and Codex sessions from
their local token totals, so newly supported model prices apply retroactively.
Model rows disclose uncached input, cache-read, cache-write, and output tokens;
all four categories contribute to the API-equivalent estimate, even though a
high cache-hit workload can make output tokens look small beside its total cost.
Claude cache writes retain their 5-minute/1-hour TTL and use the corresponding
vendor rate; older writes without TTL detail use the 5-minute rate and are
marked as estimates. GPT-5.6 pricing uses Codex's per-request usage to apply
the documented long-context tier; sessions missing complete request detail
fall back to base rates and emit a warning instead of guessing from cumulative
data. Forked Codex transcripts discard copied ancestor usage, and model changes
within one session remain attributed to the model active for each request; a
missing fork parent produces a warning because copied history cannot be safely
identified.
Zero-usage internal transcript markers such as Claude Code's <synthetic>
records remain available in JSON but are omitted from the human dashboard.
Transcript content stays local and computed Claude/Codex costs are not stored.
The header shows whether data came from SQLite or the legacy daemon.log
fallback and warns when the fallback may be stale or incomplete.
Policy status is read-only by default. Start with agentjail ui --edit-policy
only when you intentionally want enable/disable controls.

Session IDs accept short prefixes -- copy the 8-char ID from --list and use it directly.
--basic forces plain text output. The TUI also falls back to plain text automatically when piped, on TERM=dumb, or when the terminal is too small. NO_COLOR=1 keeps the TUI interactive but disables color. Use agentjail --no-color <command> to disable color consistently for any human-readable CLI report.
Updating
agentjail update
Downloads the latest release, verifies SHA-256, atomically swaps binaries, and restarts the daemon. If activation fails, it restores the previous binaries, role paths, and permissions, then restarts the restored daemon. Requires an interactive terminal (agents can't self-update). No-op when already current.
Daemon Auto-Update
The daemon automatically checks for new versions every ~6 hours. When an update is available, it downloads, verifies (signature + checksum), swaps binaries, and restarts via the platform service manager (launchd on macOS, systemd on Linux).

Removal is total: ~/.agentjail, the daemon and its launchd/systemd unit, the secrets broker, IDE wrappers, the PATH shim and its shell-profile block, every agent hook, and AgentJail's fenced global-guidance blocks. The exact unmarked two-line guidance used by pre-release builds is removed too. AgentJail's Claude Code and Cursor CLI status lines are removed — and if agentjail wrapped a status line you already had, that original command is restored verbatim. A hook or guidance cleanup failure names the affected agent and path, makes uninstall exit non-zero, and prevents the summary from claiming full removal (ADR 0063, ADR 0113).
policy.yamlis deleted. Reinstalling writes a fresh default, wheremcp.allowed: []denies every MCP server. If you have customised your MCP allowlist ornetwork.allowed_hosts, back it up first:cp ~/.agentjail/policy.yaml ~/policy.yaml.bak
--keep-credentialspreserves only the encrypted vault (secrets/) and its key (secrets.key), not your policy, database, logs, or trust state.
If the daemon wasn't started by your service manager (a manual run, a different install channel, an upgrade transition), uninstall stops and removes nothing:

That is deliberate. The daemon's hookwatch re-injects the agentjail hook the moment anything removes it — it cannot tell an uninstall from tampering — so tearing down around a live daemon would delete agentjail while leaving your agents wired to a hook binary that no longer exists. Kill it and re-run, or force it (ADR 0065):

Most core rules are user-tunable, but disabling one requires --force plus
interactive human confirmation; agents and scripts are refused even with
--force. The locked self-protection set
(file_policy/agentjail_self, command_policy/no-policy-mutation, and
resolver/default) can never be disabled. Run agentjail policy list to see
which rules are marked locked.

Install auto-seeds the allowlist from your existing MCP config (including Claude Code plugins). Changes require interactive terminal confirmation.
Session-scoped MCP grants and host connectors:
Runtime grants are narrow authority for an already configured MCP tool or host connector. They never override an explicit or locked policy deny, and they do not turn an arbitrary server name, host, port, or path into a new route. Add a host-local Chrome CDP connector to the trusted global policy before the session starts:

The connector ID is the only identity an agent-side request may name. CDP is
restricted to loopback and the fixed /json/version readiness probe; invalid,
non-loopback, duplicate, or project-overlay connector definitions are rejected.
The policy must exist before session startup. Dynamic MCP registration and
agent-selected host destinations are unsupported.
An eligible canonical ask follows requested → approved → active. Approval
does not imply reachability: activation requires the fixed readiness probe.
once is consumed at authorization, session ends on session stop or
revocation, and ttl expires synchronously. A grant is exact to its principal,
session, action, resource, arguments, and policy epoch. Different connector,
server, tool, arguments, session, or epoch is denied.
Same-host netproxy routing and a session-scoped Linux AF_UNIX endpoint exist as
transport foundations, but grant-driven MCP connector routing is intentionally
disabled. A hook allow response cannot bind a raw route or an already-open
tunnel to the exact MCP grant, so enabling that route would let one-use or TTL
authority outlive its scope. The release fixture capability-SKIPs the Linux
endpoint because this repository also does not ship the trusted container
launcher that would bind-mount it. MicroVM and macOS VM/container transports
remain unavailable: no production shared socket or vsock launch seam exists.
All of these paths fail closed rather than treating guest loopback as the host
or exposing a session-long connector route. agentjail doctor currently
reports static transport capabilities and value-free diagnostic meanings; it
does not query a live grant. A future authenticated status seam can distinguish
an actual pending, denied, inactive, expired, revoked, unreachable, or active
grant without exposing its resource or approval evidence.
Codex CLI 0.148.0 has a verified native allow-once transport for shell commands only. It has no MCP-specific native approval receipt, so MCP grant approval fails closed rather than treating a retry or visible prompt as approval. The compatibility fixture records the official Hooks and Rules sources and verification date. To recover, correct trusted preconfiguration or upstream readiness, end the affected session, and request a new grant; never work around a denial by dynamically registering an MCP server.

A project's ./.agentjail/policy.yaml is ignored until you trust it (direnv-style), can only widen egress (never drop essentials, un-block a blocked MCP, or clear rules), and trust auto-revokes if the file changes. The trust list is agent-unwritable, so a sandboxed agent can't self-trust. See ADR 0043.

The agent can only file a request for its own project -- it grants nothing by itself. grant approve, grant deny, and grant list use an agent-unreachable control socket, so the agent can never approve its own request. Approval writes the host to the trusted project overlay for future launches; it does not widen the currently running sandbox. See ADR 0047-daemon-grant-server.

Rule authoring details
Namespace: every custom rule_id must use custom/<filename_stem>/<rule>.
Validation: agentjail policy add accepts only partial candidate entries in package agentjail; resolver helpers and decision are not extensible. It also checks the namespace and compiles the full OPA bundle.
Input is type-checked: rules are compiled against a schema of the fields the daemon actually sends, so a typo like input.tool_nme is rejected at install with the offending line and the list of valid fields — rather than compiling clean and silently never firing. Referencing a field that is declared but absent at eval (aws_account on a non-AWS call, command_binaries or command_intents on a non-Bash tool) stays legal; that is normal Rego and still evaluates to undefined.
Bad rules are quarantined: if a custom rule breaks the bundle at daemon startup, the daemon skips it with a WARN log. The baseline always loads.

Network visibility
Direct agentjail run launches filter network access by port unless --tunnel
is passed. The opt-in PATH shim adds that flag by default, so ordinary
claude, codex, and Cursor agent commands route traffic through the
transparent forwarder and policy can act on what the agent does on the network:

Release checks and other callers that must prove this exact path use
--require-tunnel. It implies --tunnel and refuses to launch the agent when
tunnel setup fails, instead of silently testing a fallback network mode:

No sudo, no daemon, no install-time setup. On Linux the tunnel runs in unprivileged user + network + mount namespaces the shield creates and owns (ADR 0079). Nothing is provisioned at install; a session that never tunnels is never asked for anything (ADR 0078). Explicit launchers remain opt-in per session; installing the PATH shim records the user's standing choice to make tunneled launches the default (ADR 0127).
It decrypts HTTPS by default, and says so. Policy templates only reach
HTTP(S) traffic through TLS interception, so --tunnel terminates TLS using a CA
minted per session, kept in memory, and injected only into that agent's
namespace trust store — never the host's, never your browser's. Every launch
prints which posture it is in
(ADR 0077):

Speaks HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2. The interceptor advertises h2, http/1.1 over
ALPN and serves the agent over whichever it negotiates — so h2-only clients
(gRPC, and runtimes that pin h2) work, not just HTTP/1.1. gRPC calls are
decrypted and policy-evaluated like any other request, with status codes and
trailers (grpc-status) preserved end to end. Streaming and bidirectional RPCs
are forwarded without buffering the body, so a long-lived stream never stalls;
body-content policy applies to bounded request bodies, while host/path/method
policy applies to everything including streams
(ADR 0102).
To keep the tunnel but relay TLS opaquely — for cert-pinned endpoints, or if you
will not accept decryption — use --no-mitm, or set network.tunnel_mitm: false
in policy.yaml for a standing opt-out. The trade is real: without interception
agentjail sees only destination IP, SNI, and byte counts, and HTTP(S) policy
templates cannot match (database and SSH rules still apply).
Run agentjail doctor to see the current posture without launching an agent.
Its terminal-aware report uses the same branded colors and status glyphs on
Linux and macOS, including over SSH and inside tmux; redirected output remains
plain, while NO_COLOR disables color without removing Unicode structure.
macOS reaches the same place by a different road: instead of network
namespaces (which macOS lacks) the tunnel runs as a NETransparentProxy system
extension that funnels the agent's traffic through the same in-process gVisor
gateway and internal/mitm interceptor. HTTP(S) decryption, h2, and the policy
templates work identically; the one endpoint MITM cannot reach on macOS (Claude
Code's Bun inference client) is handled by the capture gateway below.
Tunneled macOS sessions also preserve the validated per-user $TMPDIR staging
path, so pasting an image or other temporary attachment into an agent works
without granting broad writes to /var.
Capture gateway for LLM providers
On macOS today (Linux parity is planned), some agents refuse a MITM
certificate for their model API no matter how the CA is trusted — current Claude
Code runs on Bun, and its inference client (POST /v1/messages) ignores every CA
store, so transparent MITM cannot capture it. Under --tunnel, agentjail instead
routes a detected provider agent through a
local capture gateway: it points the agent's own supported base-URL override
(ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL) at a loopback proxy, records the full request and response
(bodies included, encrypted at rest), and forwards to the real provider over TLS.
The agent keeps working; you see the traffic. A base URL you already set is
preserved (the gateway forwards to it), and a target that is neither the provider
nor an allowed host is refused. Opt out with --no-provider-gateway or
network.capture_gateway: false. See
ADR 0109.
Requirement: unprivileged user namespaces. The tunnel builds its namespaces
without root, so the kernel must allow unprivileged userns. Most distros allow
this out of the box. Ubuntu 23.10+ (including 24.04) ships it AppArmor-gated
off (kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=1). When userns is
unavailable the tunnel is not silently broken — it fails open to netproxy, so
the agent keeps working and host/SNI-level egress policy still applies; only the
HTTP(S) decryption layer is unavailable. agentjail doctor detects this and, on
Ubuntu, prints the exact one-time command to enable it:

We deliberately do not run this for you at install: flipping a system sysctl needs root, and agentjail's install never asks for a password. Enabling the full tunnel on such hosts is a conscious, one-line opt-in — or you stay on netproxy.
When the daemon is unreachable
agentjail-hook is stdlib-only and dials the daemon with a 30 ms budget. If
the daemon is down (crashed, OOM, not yet started), behavior is a configurable,
tiered policy (ADR 0050,
default set by ADR 0074):

degraded is the default because everything it denies offline is already
permanently denied online — it mirrors the locked rule set that no
policy.yaml can switch off. So it cannot refuse a call that would have
succeeded against a healthy daemon; it only keeps agentjail's self-protection
standing while the daemon is away.
Every fail-open occurrence now prints a loud, per-occurrence stderr banner
naming the active level and the exact recovery command
(agentjail daemon restart, diagnose with agentjail doctor, or let
agentjail doctor --fix restart it through its supervisor and verify the
daemon answers before saying so — ADR 0086) — replacing
the old one-time warning. The daemon compiles the current level (and, for
degraded, the offline rule set) into ~/.agentjail/hook-fallback.json on
startup and every config reload; a missing or unreadable sidecar falls back to
allow, since a daemon that never started has published no rules to enforce —
degraded protects you from a daemon that died, not one that never ran.
Daemon restart is a human control action: the CLI requires access to the
shield-protected control token and typed confirmation on /dev/tty. AgentJail
also permanently denies both agentjail daemon restart and a direct
systemctl --user restart agentjail-daemon.service from agent tool calls,
including while the policy daemon is offline in degraded mode.
Monitor mode — see what it would block, before it blocks anything
Try agentjail against your real work without it stopping anything (ADR 0091):

Every tool call is evaluated against the full policy set and the verdict is recorded — but nothing is blocked. Run it for a day, then read the report:

When you like what you see, set enforcement: enforce and the same rules start
acting. agentjail monitor --json gives the machine-readable form.
Monitor mode means the guardrail is off. It is opt-in and never a default,
the daemon warns at startup, and every affected tool call tells the agent what
would have happened and why. The unenforced window is recorded as an
enforcement.mode_changed audit event, because a log full of allow rows
cannot explain itself. A project's .agentjail/policy.yaml cannot turn it
on — only the global config can, which the shield grants read-only.
Two things it is not:
- It is not
daemon_unreachable. That axis covers a daemon that is gone; this one covers a healthy daemon choosing not to act. - It only covers tool calls. Network egress needs the tunnel (AGE-243); filesystem access is kernel-enforced by Landlock/Seatbelt and cannot be shadowed at all (AGE-244). A quiet report means your tool calls were clean — and a thin ruleset flags nothing, which looks identical.
What has it actually done? — agentjail stats
logs streams individual decisions; stats aggregates final outcomes. One
read-only pass over the local store gives you totals, top policy deny rules, a
per-agent and per-surface breakdown, latency percentiles, and any day the shield
activated but recorded zero decisions.

Tier 2 - MicroVM: microsandbox Go SDK integration for hardware-isolated agent execution on macOS (HVF), Linux (KVM), and Windows (WSL2).
SSH under the sandbox: private key files stay unreadable. The standard built-in policy enables Git over SSH automatically; if an interactive terminal has local keys but no usable agent, AgentJail offers a session-only native OpenSSH setup. It follows the current Git remote's SSH host alias and effective IdentityFile configuration. When multiple identities remain, you choose one; loading all is explicit and never the default. Any passphrase prompt comes directly from ssh-add, not AgentJail. The strict policy disables this capability. Use --git-ssh or --no-git-ssh for a per-launch override. Delegation exposes signing operations for every loaded identity and is not host- or repository-scoped. See SANDBOX.md.

The clean-VM release gate is agent-selectable and currently defaults to Codex:

Run it once on a Linux host (Lima/KVM) and once on Apple Silicon macOS (Tart)
before tagging. The Codex gate checks host RAM and disk before boot, requires a
file-based auth cache, and fails rather than skipping when authentication is
unavailable. Its VM is stopped and deleted on every exit path by default; see
test/testbed/README.md.
For an authorized independent review, the gate also has an explicit
AGENTJAIL_TESTBED_RAW_EVIDENCE_DIR mode that binds its clean-install baseline,
installer inputs, source tree, structured results, databases, and raw agent
artifacts in a temporary owner-only manifest. Those unsanitized files are never
release assets and must not be committed.

AgentJail uses Gryph for offline model-name
resolution and pricing estimates in agentjail cost and the local Cost
dashboard, supplemented by source-dated official rates for current agent models
that have not reached Gryph's bundled catalog yet. Gryph never receives
transcript content or usage data from AgentJail; all pricing is evaluated
locally.
