To set up API keys for using Reddit and the PRAW (Python Reddit API Wrapper) library in Python, follow these step-by-step instructions:
Step 1: Create a Reddit Account
- Create a Reddit account:
- If you don’t already have one, sign up for a Reddit account at https://www.reddit.com/register.
- Log into your Reddit account once the registration is complete.
Step 2: Create a Reddit App

Go to the Reddit Developer Portal:
- Visit https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps to access the Reddit developer apps page.

Create a new application:
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Create App or Create Another App.
- Fill out the form with the following information:
- name: Choose a name for your app.
- App type: Choose script (This is for personal use, which allows you to access Reddit’s API).
- description: You can add a short description (optional).
- about URL: Leave it blank (optional).
- permissions: Select read (this gives you read access to Reddit data).
- redirect URI: Set the redirect URI to
http://localhost:8000(This is the URI used during OAuth authentication). - developer permissions: Leave it as read-only.
- Click Create app to finish the process.

Get your API credentials: After creating the app, you’ll be redirected back to your app page, where you’ll see the following:
- client ID: Located just under the app name.
- client secret: You can find this by clicking edit next to your app.
Step 3: Install PRAW Library

Install PRAW:
- Open a terminal or command prompt and install the PRAW library using pip:
pip install praw
Step 4: Set Up Reddit API Authentication with PRAW

Configure your Reddit API credentials in Python: To interact with Reddit using PRAW, you need to authenticate your script with your client ID, client secret, and user agent.

myApp v1.0. - YOUR_REDDIT_USERNAME and YOUR_REDDIT_PASSWORD (optional): Only needed if you want to perform authenticated actions that require your account (e.g., posting, commenting).

Run your script: Save your Python script and run it. If everything is set up correctly, it should print out the top posts from the "learnpython" subreddit.

Once you've authenticated, you can start interacting with Reddit’s API to gather data.

Get top posts from a subreddit:
