March 7, 2026 · View on GitHub
Overview
This guide provides a roadmap for expanding the faction system (political and military) and the Way System (economic and trade) beyond their current foundations. It's designed for programmers and designers who want to build upon the existing trait, diplomacy, and network systems to create deeper, more dynamic gameplay.
Important Context:
- Faction System - Handles political diplomacy, warfare, and military alliances
- Way System - Handles economic activities, trade, industry specialization, and micro-alliances (see Way System Guide)
This guide focuses on Faction iteration. For Way System iteration, see the Way System documentation.

Gameplay Systems (Trade, Combat, Missions, etc.)
Expanding the Trait System
Phase 1: Trait Categories and Tags
Goal: Organize traits into meaningful categories for better designer workflow.
Implementation:
- Add Trait Category Enum (C++)
// In FactionDataAsset.h
UENUM(BlueprintType)
enum class EFactionTraitCategory : uint8
{
Military, // Combat and defense bonuses
Economic, // Trade and resource bonuses
Scientific, // Research and technology bonuses
Diplomatic, // Relationship modifiers
Special // Unique faction abilities
};
USTRUCT(BlueprintType)
struct FFactionTrait
{
GENERATED_BODY()
// ... existing properties ...
// NEW: Category for organization
UPROPERTY(EditAnywhere, BlueprintReadWrite, Category="Trait")
EFactionTraitCategory Category;
// NEW: Tags for advanced filtering
UPROPERTY(EditAnywhere, BlueprintReadWrite, Category="Trait")
TArray<FName> Tags;
// NEW: Duration (0 = permanent, >0 = temporary in seconds)
UPROPERTY(EditAnywhere, BlueprintReadWrite, Category="Trait")
float Duration;
};
- Add Trait Query Functions (C++)
// In FactionDataAsset.h
/**
* Get all traits of a specific category
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Faction Traits")
TArray<FFactionTrait> GetTraitsByCategory(EFactionTraitCategory Category) const;
/**
* Get all traits with a specific tag
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Faction Traits")
TArray<FFactionTrait> GetTraitsByTag(FName Tag) const;
/**
* Get total modifier for all traits in a category
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Faction Traits")
float GetCategoryModifier(EFactionTraitCategory Category) const;
Usage Example:
Designer creates trait:
Name: "Advanced Shields"
Category: Military
Tags: ["Defense", "Energy"]
Modifier: 0.30
Duration: 0 (permanent)
Blueprint checks:
GetTraitsByCategory(Military) → Returns all combat traits
GetCategoryModifier(Military) → Returns sum of all military modifiers
Phase 2: Dynamic Trait Application
Goal: Allow traits to be added/removed at runtime through gameplay.
Implementation:
- Create Runtime Trait Manager (C++)
// New file: FactionRuntimeState.h
UCLASS(BlueprintType)
class ADASTREA_API UFactionRuntimeState : public UObject
{
GENERATED_BODY()
public:
// Reference to the static template
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly, Category="Faction State")
UFactionDataAsset* FactionTemplate;
// Runtime traits (temporary bonuses/penalties)
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly, Category="Faction State")
TArray<FFactionTrait> RuntimeTraits;
// Runtime reputation with player
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadWrite, Category="Faction State")
int32 CurrentReputation;
/**
* Add a temporary trait at runtime
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Faction State")
void AddRuntimeTrait(const FFactionTrait& Trait);
/**
* Remove a runtime trait
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Faction State")
bool RemoveRuntimeTrait(FName TraitID);
/**
* Get combined modifiers from both template and runtime traits
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Faction State")
float GetTotalTraitModifier(FName TraitID) const;
/**
* Update timed traits (call from tick or timer)
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Faction State")
void UpdateTimedTraits(float DeltaTime);
};
- Integration with Game State
// In your GameState or GameInstance
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly, Category="Factions")
TMap<FName, UFactionRuntimeState*> FactionStates;
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Factions")
UFactionRuntimeState* GetFactionState(FName FactionID);
Usage Example:
Player completes a research mission for a faction:
GetFactionState("NovaVanguard")
→ AddRuntimeTrait(Trait: "Research Bonus", Modifier: 0.15, Duration: 3600)
After 3600 seconds (1 hour):
UpdateTimedTraits() → Removes expired trait
Phase 3: Trait-Driven Gameplay Effects
Goal: Make traits affect actual gameplay systems.
Implementation Examples:
Example 1: Economic Trait Affecting Trade Prices
// In your trading system
float CalculateTradePrice(FName FactionID, FName ItemID, float BasePrice)
{
UFactionRuntimeState* FactionState = GetFactionState(FactionID);
if (!FactionState) return BasePrice;
// Get economic modifier from traits
float EconomicModifier = FactionState->GetTotalTraitModifier(TEXT("TradeBonus"));
// Apply modifier (0.2 = 20% discount)
float ModifiedPrice = BasePrice * (1.0f - EconomicModifier);
return ModifiedPrice;
}
Example 2: Military Trait Affecting Combat
// In your combat system
float CalculateDamage(AActor* Attacker, AActor* Target, float BaseDamage)
{
// Get attacker's faction
UFactionDataAsset* Faction = GetActorFaction(Attacker);
if (!Faction) return BaseDamage;
// Check for combat traits
float CombatModifier = Faction->GetTraitModifier(TEXT("CombatEffectiveness"));
// Apply modifier
float FinalDamage = BaseDamage * (1.0f + CombatModifier);
return FinalDamage;
}
Example 3: Research Trait Affecting Tech Level
Blueprint: Research Complete Event
↓
Get Station Faction
↓
Has Trait ("Innovative")
↓
Branch

Developing Diplomacy Mechanics
Phase 1: Dynamic Reputation System
Goal: Allow player actions to affect faction relationships.
Implementation:
- Player Reputation Component (C++)
// New file: PlayerReputationComponent.h
UCLASS(ClassGroup=(Custom), meta=(BlueprintSpawnableComponent))
class ADASTREA_API UPlayerReputationComponent : public UActorComponent
{
GENERATED_BODY()
public:
// Reputation with each faction (-100 to 100)
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly, Category="Reputation")
TMap<FName, int32> FactionReputations;
/**
* Modify reputation with a faction
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Reputation")
void ChangeReputation(FName FactionID, int32 Delta);
/**
* Get current reputation with a faction
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Reputation")
int32 GetReputation(FName FactionID) const;
/**
* Get reputation level as enum (Hostile, Unfriendly, Neutral, Friendly, Allied)
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Reputation")
EReputationLevel GetReputationLevel(FName FactionID) const;
/**
* Check if faction will attack player
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Reputation")
bool IsFactionHostile(FName FactionID) const;
};
- Reputation Change Events
// Reputation thresholds
-100 to -50: Hostile (shoot on sight)
-49 to -1: Unfriendly (restricted access, higher prices)
0 to 49: Neutral (normal interactions)
50 to 74: Friendly (discounts, missions available)
75 to 100: Allied (special access, best prices)
Usage Example:
Player destroys a pirate ship:
GetFaction(PirateShip) → "CelestialSyndicate"
PlayerReputation->ChangeReputation("CelestialSyndicate", -10)
PlayerReputation->ChangeReputation("NovaVanguard", +5) // They like pirate hunters
Check new reputation level:
If now Hostile → Faction stations attack player
If now Allied → Unlock special missions
Phase 2: Inter-Faction Diplomacy
Goal: Factions can change relationships with each other over time.
Implementation:
- Faction Diplomacy Manager (C++)
// New file: FactionDiplomacyManager.h
UCLASS()
class ADASTREA_API UFactionDiplomacyManager : public UObject
{
GENERATED_BODY()
public:
/**
* Change relationship between two factions
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Diplomacy")
void ModifyRelationship(FName Faction1, FName Faction2, int32 Delta);
/**
* Declare war between factions
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Diplomacy")
void DeclareWar(FName Faction1, FName Faction2);
/**
* Form alliance between factions
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Diplomacy")
void FormAlliance(FName Faction1, FName Faction2);
/**
* Break alliance
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Diplomacy")
void BreakAlliance(FName Faction1, FName Faction2);
/**
* Trigger diplomacy event (peace treaty, trade agreement, etc.)
*/
UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category="Diplomacy")
void TriggerDiplomaticEvent(FName Faction1, FName Faction2, EDiplomaticEventType EventType);
};
- Diplomacy Events
UENUM(BlueprintType)
enum class EDiplomaticEventType : uint8
{
PeaceTreaty, // End war, set relationship to neutral
TradeAgreement, // Increase trade modifier
MilitaryAlliance, // Form alliance
Betrayal, // Break alliance and declare war
TerritoryDispute, // Decrease relationship
CulturalExchange // Increase relationship
};
Usage Example:
Story event triggers:
DiplomacyManager->DeclareWar("NovaVanguard", "ObsidianOrder")
Effect:
- Both factions set bAtWar = true
- Relationship values drop to -100
- Trade modifier set to 0.0
- Trigger visual/audio feedback
- Spawn combat encounters
Phase 3: Diplomacy Actions and Missions
Goal: Player can influence faction relationships through missions.
Implementation Ideas:
Diplomatic Mission Types:
-
Peace Broker Mission
- Two factions at war
- Player must complete tasks for both
- Success: War ends, player gains reputation with both
- Failure: Reputation loss with both
-
Espionage Mission
- Steal data from one faction for another
- Success: Improves relationship with employer, damages target
- Discovered: Relationship loss with both
-
Trade Route Protection
- Protect convoy between allied factions
- Success: Strengthen alliance, trade bonus
- Failure: Alliance weakens
-
Diplomatic Courier
- Deliver messages between factions
- Multiple outcomes based on player choices
- Can influence peace/war

Faction-Driven Gameplay Systems
Trade System Integration
Goal: Faction political relationships affect high-level trade access and embargoes.
Note: Day-to-day trade operations are handled by the Way System. This section focuses on how faction politics affect overall trade permissions.
Implementation:
float CalculateTradePrice(FName FactionID, FName ItemID, float BasePrice)
{
// Get player reputation
int32 Reputation = PlayerReputation->GetReputation(FactionID);
// Get faction relationship data
UFactionDataAsset* Faction = GetFactionData(FactionID);
float TradeModifier = Faction->GetTradeModifier(PlayerFactionID);
// Calculate price modifier based on reputation
float ReputationModifier = 1.0f;
if (Reputation >= 75)
ReputationModifier = 0.85f; // 15% discount for allies
else if (Reputation >= 50)
ReputationModifier = 0.95f; // 5% discount for friends
else if (Reputation <= -50)
ReputationModifier = 1.50f; // 50% markup for enemies
else if (Reputation < 0)
ReputationModifier = 1.15f; // 15% markup for unfriendly
// Combine modifiers
float FinalPrice = BasePrice * ReputationModifier * TradeModifier;
return FinalPrice;
}
Item Availability:
bool IsItemAvailableForTrade(FName FactionID, FName ItemID)
{
int32 Reputation = PlayerReputation->GetReputation(FactionID);
// Get item required reputation level
int32 RequiredReputation = GetItemReputationRequirement(ItemID);
// Check if player meets requirement
return Reputation >= RequiredReputation;
}
Combat System Integration
Goal: Faction hostility determines NPC behavior.
Implementation:
// In AI Controller or Behavior Tree
bool ShouldAttackPlayer()
{
// Get NPC's faction
UFactionDataAsset* Faction = GetFaction();
if (!Faction) return false;
// Get player reputation
int32 Reputation = PlayerReputation->GetReputation(Faction->FactionID);
// Hostile factions attack
if (Reputation <= -50 || Faction->bHostileByDefault)
return true;
// Check if faction is at war with player's allies
if (IsAtWarWithPlayerAllies())
return true;
return false;
}
Mission System Integration
Goal: Generate faction-specific missions based on relationships.
Implementation:
Mission Generator:
ForEach Faction
↓
Get Reputation Level
↓
Branch (Reputation Level)
├─ Allied: Generate high-level missions, rare rewards
├─ Friendly: Generate standard missions
├─ Neutral: Generate basic missions only
├─ Unfriendly: No missions available
└─ Hostile: Generate counter-missions (player must attack this faction)
Mission Examples:
Allied Faction Missions:
- "Prototype Testing" (access to experimental tech)
- "Joint Operation" (coordinate with faction fleet)
- "VIP Transport" (ferry faction leader)
Friendly Faction Missions:
- "Resource Delivery"
- "Patrol Route"
- "Data Recovery"
Neutral Faction Missions:
- "Simple Courier"
- "Basic Cargo Transport"
Against Hostile Factions:
- "Raid Enemy Station"
- "Intercept Convoy"
- "Sabotage Operation"
Dynamic Faction Behaviors
Phase 1: Territory Control
Goal: Factions control sectors of space dynamically.
Implementation Concept:
USTRUCT(BlueprintType)
struct FSectorControl
{
GENERATED_BODY()
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly)
FName SectorID;
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly)
FName ControllingFaction;
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly)
float ControlStrength; // 0.0 to 1.0 (1.0 = full control)
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly)
TMap<FName, float> ContestingFactions; // Other factions vying for control
};
Usage:
Player completes mission in sector:
GetSectorControl("AlphaSector")
→ ControllingFaction = "NovaVanguard"
→ ControlStrength = 0.65
Player destroys enemy station:
ModifySectorControl("AlphaSector", "NovaVanguard", -0.15)
ModifySectorControl("AlphaSector", "CelestialSyndicate", +0.15)
If ControlStrength < 0.50:
→ Sector changes hands
→ Trigger visual update (new faction flags/colors)
→ Update available missions
→ Change station ownership
Phase 2: Fleet Movements
Goal: Faction fleets patrol and engage in their territories.
Implementation Concept:
UCLASS()
class AFactionFleet : public AActor
{
GENERATED_BODY()
public:
UPROPERTY(EditAnywhere, BlueprintReadWrite)
UFactionDataAsset* Faction;
UPROPERTY(EditAnywhere, BlueprintReadWrite)
int32 FleetStrength; // Based on faction's military attribute
UPROPERTY(EditAnywhere, BlueprintReadWrite)
TArray<FName> PatrolRoute; // Sectors to patrol
/**
* Behavior determined by faction relationships
*/
void UpdateFleetBehavior();
};
Behavior Examples:
Friendly Fleet:
- Ignores player
- Assists player if attacked
- Offers escort missions
Neutral Fleet:
- Ignores player unless provoked
- Scan player for contraband (if applicable)
Hostile Fleet:
- Attacks player on sight
- Pursues if player flees
- Calls reinforcements
Phase 3: Economic Simulation
Goal: Factions produce and trade resources dynamically.
Implementation Concept:
USTRUCT(BlueprintType)
struct FFactionEconomy
{
GENERATED_BODY()
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly)
TMap<FName, int32> ResourceProduction; // Resources produced per cycle
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly)
TMap<FName, int32> ResourceStockpile; // Current resources
UPROPERTY(BlueprintReadOnly)
TArray<FTradeRoute> TradeRoutes; // Active trade with other factions
};
Usage:
Economic Cycle (every game hour):
ForEach Faction
↓
Produce Resources (based on stations and traits)
↓
Consume Resources (based on fleet and structures)
↓
Trade with Allied Factions
↓
Update Resource Prices (supply/demand)
Advanced Integration Ideas
Idea 1: Faction Evolution Over Time
Concept: Factions gain/lose traits based on player actions and world events.
Example:
NovaVanguard wins a major battle:
→ Gain trait "War Hero" (+0.20 military, duration: 30 days)
→ Increase military strength attribute
→ Spawn more patrols
NovaVanguard suffers economic collapse:
→ Gain trait "Economic Crisis" (-0.30 economic, duration: 60 days)
→ Reduce station amenities
→ Offer desperate missions for resources
Idea 2: Player-Founded Faction
Concept: Player can create their own faction.
Implementation:
Create new FactionDataAsset at runtime (or use template)
→ Set player as faction leader
→ Start with low attributes
→ Build reputation with other factions
→ Recruit NPCs to faction
→ Construct faction stations
→ Form alliances or declare wars
Idea 3: Faction-Specific Storylines
Concept: Each faction has a unique story arc.
Example:
NovaVanguard Story Arc:
Chapter 1: Prove loyalty (reputation 0 → 50)
↓
Chapter 2: Join elite squadron (reputation 50 → 75)
↓
Chapter 3: Prevent alien invasion (reputation 75 → 100)
↓
Reward: Unique faction ship and technology
Idea 4: Faction Conflicts Affect Universe
Concept: Wars change the game world.
Example:
NovaVanguard vs Obsidian Order War:
→ Border sectors become war zones
→ Trade routes disrupted
→ Neutral factions forced to choose sides
→ Winner claims territory
→ Technology from losers becomes available
→ Refugee missions appear
