Introduction:

What's the point of doing Morse Code any more these days? Didn't that go away with the telegraph?
No, it didn't.

In some ways the general perception is correct that it has become anachronistic. But when an emergency occurs and lots of equipment is broken, there is no other means of communications that works with the simplest radios, gets through interference better, and uses less radio bandwidth (allowing more communications to occur simultaneously) than Morse Code. In short, there may be nothing else that will work in some emergencies.

For those reasons, Morse Code is required to get any Ham Radio license which has privileges in the HF Ham bands, at frequencies where the atmosphere is able to refract the signals back to the surface hundreds or thousands of miles away. It is considered unlikely that the Morse Code requirement will be removed any time soon from Ham Radio license classes with access to HF Ham bands. (Morse Code is not required for all classes of Ham Radio licenses. Since the early 1990's many countries, including the USA, Japan, most of Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, have made entry-level "no-code" Ham Radio licenses which are restricted from using HF bands but have full privileges on the VHF, UHF and microwave Ham bands.)

Some Hams do Morse Code because they like it. Others do it because they want other privileges that come with a higher class of Ham Radio license that requires it. Most Hams agree that the requirement is necessary to maintain a sufficiently-large group of people ready to respond when the code is used by other stations in an emergency or disaster.

In the United States, these are the license classes and their corresponding code testing requirements.
