Upgrading from v0.17 to v0.18

Breaking Changes Checklist
Behavioral breaks:
- ALSA, CoreAudio, JACK: Add an explicit
stream.play()call afterbuild_*_stream()if you were relying on these backends to auto-start streams. - If you relied on the default config returning 44.1 kHz, pin the sample rate explicitly.
- If you relied on a specific integer format when
F32is unavailable, pin the sample format explicitly;I32andI24are now ranked aboveI16.

1. Unified Error and ErrorKind type
What changed: All per-operation error types (DevicesError, SupportedStreamConfigsError, DefaultStreamConfigError, BuildStreamError, StreamError, PlayStreamError, PauseStreamError) and the HostUnavailable struct are replaced by a single cpal::Error struct with getters for its kind() and optional message().

The message() getter on Error returns human-readable context (formerly in BackendSpecific::err).
Why: A single type simplifies error handling across all cpal operations and allows new ErrorKind variants to be added without changing any return types.
2. StreamConfig is now passed by value
What changed: StreamConfig now implements Copy, and all DeviceTrait stream-building methods accept it by value.

Impact: Remove the & at every build_*_stream call site. Because StreamConfig is Copy, you can reuse the same binding across multiple calls without cloning.
If you implement DeviceTrait on your own type (via the custom feature), update your build_input_stream_raw and build_output_stream_raw signatures from config: &StreamConfig to config: StreamConfig. Any config.clone() calls before move closures can also be removed.
3. StreamInstant API overhaul
The StreamInstant API has been aligned with std::time::Instant and std::time::Duration.
duration_since now returns Duration (saturating)
What changed: duration_since now returns Duration directly, saturating to Duration::ZERO when the argument is later than self, instead of returning Option<Duration>.

Why: Mirrors the saturating behavior of std::time::Instant::saturating_duration_since in the Rust standard library.
add / sub renamed to checked_add / checked_sub; operator impls added
What changed: The add and sub methods (which returned Option) are replaced by checked_add / checked_sub with the same semantics. +, -, +=, and -= operator impls are also added.

Why: Aligns the API with std::time::Instant, making StreamInstant more idiomatic.
new and from_nanos take unsigned integers
What changed: The secs parameter of StreamInstant::new and the nanos parameter of StreamInstant::from_nanos are now u64 instead of i64.

Why: All audio host clocks are positive and monotonic; they are never negative.
4. Default sample rate changed to 48 kHz
What changed: default_input_config() and default_output_config() now prefer 48 kHz, then 44.1 kHz, then the device maximum.
If your pipeline requires 44.1 kHz, request it explicitly:

Why: 48 kHz is the native rate of virtually all modern hardware; the old default caused unnecessary resampling on such devices.
5. Default sample format selection changed
What changed: default_input_config() and default_output_config() now select formats in a defined order covering all SampleFormat variants. F32 is still preferred first. Previously only F32, I16, and U16 had defined priority; everything else was selected by enumeration order. I32 and I24 now take priority over I16, so hardware that previously fell back to I16 when F32 was unavailable may now return I32 or I24.
If you depend on a specific format, request it explicitly:

Why: The new order is F32 > F64 > integers by bit-depth descending > DSD.
6. audio_thread_priority feature renamed to realtime-dbus
What changed: The audio_thread_priority feature has been renamed to realtime-dbus. A new realtime feature was also added, providing the same scheduling promotion without a D-Bus build dependency (suitable for headless or embedded targets).

On Linux and BSD, realtime-dbus requires libdbus-1-dev (Debian/Ubuntu), dbus-devel (Fedora/RHEL), or equivalent at build time.
For both features, promotion failures are non-fatal: the stream still starts and an ErrorKind::RealtimeDenied error is delivered through error_callback.
7. Streams are returned paused on every backend
What changed: build_input_stream and build_output_stream now return a paused Stream on every backend. Previously, ALSA, CoreAudio, and JACK started the stream automatically.

Impact: If you were targeting ALSA, CoreAudio, or JACK and never called play(), your callback will never fire after upgrading. Add the play() call.
Why: Auto-starting before the caller has the Stream handle creates a window where data and error callbacks can fire before the application can pause, stop, or drop the stream. The behavior is now uniform across all backends.
8. wasm32-unknown-emscripten target removed
What changed: The emscripten audio host and the wasm32-unknown-emscripten build target are no longer supported.
Migrate to wasm32-unknown-unknown and enable the wasm-bindgen feature:

Then select the webaudio host at runtime:

If you must target wasm32-unknown-emscripten specifically, consider using OpenAL or another audio approach that supports that target, as cpal no longer provides audio on Emscripten.
Why: The old emscripten host relied on deprecated Emscripten audio APIs that are no longer functional.
9. DeviceId is now opaque
What changed: The tuple fields of DeviceId are no longer pub. Direct struct construction
and field access are replaced by a typed API.

Why: The internal representation can change without breaking callers.
10. DeviceDescription::extended() returns an iterator
What changed: extended() now returns impl Iterator<Item = &str> instead of &[String].

If you need random access or a collected copy, call .collect():

Why: Decouples the return type from the backing store, making future storage changes
non-breaking. The iterator yields &str directly, which is simpler than &String at every
call site.
11. Custom host implementations
This section applies only if you implement HostTrait, DeviceTrait, or StreamTrait via the custom feature.
DeviceTrait supertrait bounds
What changed: DeviceTrait now requires PartialEq + Eq + Hash + Debug + Display as supertraits.

Why: These bounds allow devices to be used as hash map keys and displayed uniformly, supporting stable device IDs and the Device::eq functionality added in v0.17.
StreamTrait::buffer_size and StreamTrait::now
What changed: Two methods with no default implementation were added to StreamTrait.

DeviceDescriptionBuilder setter arguments
What changed: Setter methods on DeviceDescriptionBuilder now accept impl AsRef<str> instead of impl Into<String>.

What changed: SampleRate changed from a struct to a u32 type alias.

Impact: Remove SampleRate() constructor calls. The type is now just u32, so use integer literals or variables directly.
2. Device::name() deprecated (soft deprecation)
What changed: Device::name() is deprecated in favor of id() and description().

Impact: Deprecation warnings only. The old API still works in v0.17. Update when convenient to prepare for future versions.
Why: Separates stable device identification (id()) from human-readable names (description()).
3. CoreAudio Stream no longer Clone (macOS)
What changed: On macOS, Stream no longer implements Clone. Use Arc instead.

4. BufferSize behavior changes
BufferSize::Default now uses host defaults
What changed: BufferSize::Default now defers to the audio host/device defaults instead of applying cpal's opinionated defaults.
Impact: Buffer sizes may differ from v0.16, affecting latency characteristics:
- Latency will vary based on host/device defaults (which may be lower, higher, or similar)
- May underrun or have different latency depending on what the host chooses
- Better integration with system audio configuration: cpal now respects configured settings instead of imposing its own buffers. For example, on ALSA, PipeWire quantum settings (via the pipewire-alsa device) are now honored instead of being overridden.
Migration: If you experience underruns, fast-forwarding behavior or need specific latency, use BufferSize::Fixed(size) instead of relying on possibly misconfigured system defaults.
Platform-specific notes:
- ALSA: Previously used cpal's hardcoded 25ms periods / 100ms buffer, now uses device defaults
- All platforms: Default buffer sizes now match what the host audio system expects
BufferSize::Fixed validation changes
What changed: Several backends now have different validation behavior for BufferSize::Fixed:
- ALSA: Now uses
set_buffer_size_near()for improved hardware compatibility with devices requiring byte-alignment, power-of-two sizes, or other alignment constraints (was: exact size viaset_buffer_size(), which would reject unsupported sizes) - JACK: Must exactly match server buffer size (was: silently ignored)
- Emscripten/WebAudio: Validates min/max range
- ASIO: Stricter lower bound validation

6. ALSA device enumeration changed (Linux)
What changed: Device enumeration now returns all devices from aplay -L. v0.16 had a regression that only returned card names, missing all device variants.
- v0.16: Only card names ("Loopback", "HDA Intel PCH")
- v0.17: All aplay -L devices (default, hw:CARD=X,DEV=Y, plughw:, front:, surround51:, etc.)
Impact: Many more devices will be enumerated. Device names/IDs will be much more detailed. Update any code that matches specific ALSA device names.
7. Wasm wee_alloc feature removed
What changed: The optional wee_alloc feature was removed for security reasons.

Notable Non-Breaking Improvements
v0.17 also includes significant improvements that don't require code changes:
- Stable device IDs: New
device.id()returns persistent device identifiers that survive reboots/reconnections. Usehost.device_by_id()to reliably select saved devices. - Streams are Send+Sync everywhere: All platforms now support moving/sharing streams across threads
- 24-bit sample formats: Added
