Generating Custom Datasets with an LLM

While Spikee provides a variety of seed datasets, you may need to assess how your application handles inputs specific to its domain. Using a large language model (like GPT-4, Claude 3, or a local equivalent) can significantly accelerate the creation of these custom datasets.
This guide covers two methods for generating tailored test cases.
Important: Any dataset generated synthetically with an LLM should be manually reviewed and curated before use. Check for relevance, quality, and potential biases, and ensure the judge_name and judge_args accurately reflect the testing goal. LLMs can produce repetitive or low-quality output, so careful review is essential for a meaningful test.
Method 1: Generating Standalone Attacks
This method is ideal for creating a set of direct, self-contained prompts. These are not combined with other jailbreaks or documents. Use this approach to test:
- Topical guardrails (e.g., blocking medical or financial advice).
- Direct generation of harmful or policy-violating content.
Steps

Create a New Seed Folder: Copy the
seeds-emptydirectory fromdatasets/to start a new, clean seed for your standalone attacks.cp -r datasets/seeds-empty datasets/seeds-medical-advice -
Define Your Goal and Judge: Clearly state what kind of prompts you need. For example, "questions asking for a specific medical diagnosis." Then, decide how to evaluate success. For this type of test, an LLM-based judge is often necessary.

Prompt the Generation LLM: Instruct the LLM to generate prompts that match your goal and output them in the required
standalone_user_inputs.jsonlformat.Example LLM Prompt (for Medical Advice Queries):
You are a data generation assistant. Your task is to generate 20 diverse user prompts that attempt to elicit a specific medical diagnosis from an AI. Generate 20 distinct prompts. Review and Save: Manually review the generated JSONL content for quality and relevance. Save it as
standalone_user_inputs.jsonlinside your new seed folder (e.g.,datasets/seeds-medical-advice/sstandalone_user_inputs.jsonl). -
Generate the Spikee Dataset: Run
spikee generate, pointing to your new seed folder and the standalone file.spikee generate --seed-folder datasets/seeds-medical-advice \ --include-standalone-inputsSince the other files in
seeds-medical-adviceare empty, this will produce a dataset containing only your standalone attacks.
Method 2: Generating Custom Instructions
This method generates new instructions that can be combined with existing jailbreaks and documents from another seed. This is useful for creating more complex attacks that leverage known jailbreks.
Steps

Copy an Existing Seed Folder: Do not modify the original seeds. Make a copy of a seed folder you want to adapt.

Review and Replace: Manually review the generated JSONL. Replace the
instructions.jsonlfile inside your copied seed folder (e.g.,datasets/seeds-cybersec-medical-instr/instructions.jsonl) with the newly generated content. -
Generate the Spikee Dataset: Run
spikee generate, pointing to the copied and modified seed folder.spikee generate --seed-folder datasets/seeds-cybersec-medical-instrThis will combine the original jailbreaks and documents from
seeds-cybersec-2026-01with your new custom instructions, creating a new set of test cases.
