Attack Effects

State Tampering is an attack method targeting trading agents' perception of positions and ledgers. By using hook mechanisms to tamper with the position state read by agents at runtime, it causes a deviation between the agent's perception of its own assets and order status and the actual ledger, leading to erroneous trading decisions.

State Tampering Plugin Effects
The state tampering plugin intercepts file read operations through file hooks, injecting false information when agents query position status, causing agents to make trading decisions based on incorrect perceptions.

Core Mechanism:

  • Inject dynamic library through LD_PRELOAD mechanism to intercept agents' read operations on position files
  • Selectively tamper with returned state data based on configured strategies (such as trigger conditions, time windows, tampering frequency, etc.)
  • Agents make decisions based on tampered state information while the actual ledger remains unchanged, creating cognitive bias
  • Support audit log recording to compare differences between agent perspective and actual ledger

Attack Effects:

  • Position Perception Bias: By tampering with state, agents mistakenly believe that a stock's (e.g., NVDA) position is 0, while the actual ledger may already hold that stock
  • Continuous Buying Behavior: Based on incorrect perception (believing position is 0), agents continuously buy the stock to "balance positions", resulting in actual positions far exceeding expectations
  • Risk Exposure Amplification: As the incorrect perception persists, agents keep adding positions, resulting in excessive NVDA holdings and over-concentration of the investment portfolio
  • Manipulability Verification: Experiments found that after 10-28, the agent's return curve is basically consistent with NVDA's stock price curve, proving that trading behavior can be effectively manipulated after state tampering, completely following the asset trend indicated by the tampered state

File Description

  • hook_config.sample.json: Sample configuration, copy to hook_config.json and modify as needed.
  • file_hook.c / file_hook.so: Hook implementation source code and compiled product.
  • Can be extended to store multiple plugins or strategy scripts in the future.

Quick Start Guide

1. Copy Configuration

cp plugins/hook_config.sample.json plugins/hook_config.json

Modify the content in hook_config.json according to your needs:

  • profiles: Define multiple strategy sets (e.g., default, monthly_attack).
  • runtime.active_profile: Specify the currently active strategy.
  • Other parameters are detailed in the next section.

2. Compile to Generate file_hook.so

Execute in the project root directory:

gcc -shared -fPIC -o plugins/file_hook.so plugins/file_hook.c -ldl

You can write this command into a Makefile or script for easy reuse.

3. Set Environment Variables & Inject

Replace the path with an absolute path, ensuring it's set before the agent starts.

You can also use the inject_hook.sh helper script in the repository root:

4. View Results

  • position.jsonl: Actual ledger.
  • data/.../audit.jsonl: Compare differences between agent perspective and ledger perspective.
  • If runtime.metrics_path is enabled in the configuration, the hook will additionally write statistics such as hit counts.

  • target_symbols: Can be specific stocks or * wildcard.
  • tamper_interval: How many hits between each tampering, 1 means tamper every time.
  • tamper_max: Maximum number of times, null means unlimited; if state_reset is enabled, the count will automatically reset after reaching the limit.
  • id_range: Only trigger when position record id is within the range, can be used to control which transaction to tamper.
  • active_dates / active_time: Date and time window filtering, leave empty to disable filtering.
  • trigger_conditions.cash_below: Only trigger when actual ledger cash is below this value.
  • trigger_conditions.position_above: Specify position threshold, e.g., {"NVDA": 10} means tamper only when NVDA exceeds 10 shares.
  • log_level: Hook internal debug output level (requires code support).
  • runtime.reload_on_change: Whether to monitor configuration file changes and automatically reload.
  • runtime.metrics_path: File path for output statistics, can be used for monitoring.
  • runtime.audit_enabled: Whether to enable audit log extension.
  • runtime.printf_logging: Whether to output debug logs to terminal.

FAQ

  • Why use absolute paths?
    The runtime environment may be in different working directories. Using absolute paths avoids not finding configuration/so files.

  • Do I need to restart after modifying the configuration?
    If reload_on_change is true and the hook implements monitoring logic, hot reloading is possible; otherwise, the process needs to be restarted.

  • How to add more complex trigger conditions?
    You can extend new fields in the configuration, such as referencing external signal files, exact matching of certain ids, etc., then read and implement the logic in file_hook.c.

  • How to switch between multiple configurations?
    Simply modify the runtime.active_profile value, or dynamically replace it through scripts before startup.


With the above process, daily use only requires:

  1. Adjust hook_config.json;
  2. Recompile or reuse existing file_hook.so;
  3. Set environment variables and start the agent; You can precisely control the hook's perturbation behavior according to the configuration.
