macOS mostly ignores the M4/M5 mouse buttons, commonly used for navigation. Third-party apps can bind them to ⌘+[ and ⌘+], but this only works in a small number of apps and feels janky. With this tool, your side buttons will simulate 3-finger swipes, allowing you to navigate almost any window with a history. As seen in the Logitech MX Master!

To ensure SensibleSideButtons opens whenever you start your computer:

macOS Ventura (13) and later

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Click General
  3. Click Login Items (or Login Items & Extensions on newer macOS)
  4. Under Open at Login, click +
  5. Select SensibleSideButtons.app (e.g. in Applications) and click Open
  6. (Optional) If present, ensure it’s enabled under Allow in Background

macOS Monterey (12) and earlier

  1. Go to System Preferences
  2. Click Users & Groups
  3. Click your username in the left panel
  4. Click Login Items
  5. Click the + button
  6. Select SensibleSideButtons.app and add it
