A2A Scanner - Testing Guide

This guide shows you how to run and test the A2A Scanner using the example threat files.


Setup

1. Install the Scanner

Installing as a CLI Tool

# Install UV
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh
# or: brew install uv

uv tool install --python 3.13 cisco-ai-a2a-scanner

Alternatively, you can install from source:

uv tool install --python 3.13 --from git+https://github.com/cisco-ai-defense/a2a-scanner cisco-ai-a2a-scanner

Installing for Local Development

2. Verify Installation

# Check CLI is available
a2a-scanner list-analyzers
a2a-scanner --help

# Should show available commands:
# - scan-file      Scan a file containing agent card or A2A protocol data
# - scan-card      Scan an agent card JSON file
# - scan-registry  Scan an agent registry
# - scan-directory Scan all files in a directory

Quick Test: Scan Individual Threat Files

Method 1: Using CLI

cd a2a-scanner

# Scan a Python threat file
a2a-scanner scan-file examples/a2a_threat_files/tool_poison.py

# Scan a JavaScript threat file
a2a-scanner scan-file examples/a2a_threat_files/aitm_proxy.js

# Scan with specific analyzers only (faster, no API key needed)

# Scan and save results to JSON

Method 2: Using Python API

Create a test script test_scanner.py:

Method 1: Scan Directory

Method 2: Batch Scan Script

Create batch_test.py:

Run the Provided Examples

The examples/example_usage.py file contains comprehensive examples:

Understanding Threat Files

Each threat file in examples/a2a_threat_files/ demonstrates a specific attack:

tool_poison.py

Should detect:

  • ✅ Exfiltration endpoint (http://localhost:9010/exfil)
  • ✅ Context data transmission ({"ctx": body})
  • ✅ POST to suspicious endpoint
  • Expected Severity: HIGH

aitm_proxy.js

Should detect:

  • ✅ Agent-in-the-Middle patterns
  • ✅ Message interception
  • ✅ Traffic manipulation
  • Expected Severity: HIGH

ssrf_demo.js

Should detect:

  • ✅ User-controlled URL fetching
  • ✅ Unvalidated fetch operations
  • ✅ SSRF vulnerability
  • Expected Severity: HIGH

fanout_dos.js

Should detect:

  • ✅ Large loop iterations
  • ✅ Recursive spawning
  • ✅ Resource exhaustion patterns
  • Expected Severity: HIGH

Testing with Different Analyzers

YARA Only (Fast, No API Key Required)

Detects: Pattern-based threats using compiled YARA rules

Pattern Analyzer (Fast, No API Key Required)

a2a-scanner scan-file examples/a2a_threat_files/ssrf_demo.js -a pattern

Detects: Heuristic-based threats using regex patterns

a2a-scanner scan-file examples/a2a_threat_files/aitm_proxy.js -a yara -a pattern

All Analyzers (Requires LLM API Key)

Troubleshooting

Issue: Command not found

# Solution: Install the package from PyPI using uv (recommended)
uv tool install --python 3.13 cisco-ai-a2a-scanner

# Or using pip
pip install cisco-ai-a2a-scanner

# Or from source
pip install -e .

Issue: YARA compilation errors

# Solution: Install yara-python
pip install yara-python

# On macOS, you may need to install YARA first:
brew install yara

Issue: LLM analyzer fails

# Solution: Use only YARA and Pattern analyzers
a2a-scanner scan-file FILE -a yara -a pattern

# Or set up LLM API key:
export OPENAI_API_KEY="your-key"

Issue: No threats detected on known malicious file

# Solution: Enable debug mode to see what's happening

Performance Testing

Test scan speed:

# Time a single scan

# Typical results:
# - YARA only: ~0.1s
# - YARA + Pattern: ~0.2s
# - All analyzers: ~2-5s (depends on LLM API)
