Overview

A proposed AI agent for evaluating and recommending Large Language Models (LLMs) for specific tasks based on technical criteria including tool usage capabilities, cost structures, context windows, and community feedback.

This document outlines the planning and specification phase. Implementation has not yet begun.

Problem Statement

Selecting an appropriate LLM for specific use cases requires manual research across multiple sources:

  • Reviewing benchmarks (e.g., SWE-Bench, MMLU)
  • Comparing model capabilities and technical specifications
  • Analyzing cost structures and pricing models
  • Researching community feedback and real-world performance
  • Evaluating local vs. cloud deployment feasibility
  • Repeating this process as new models are released

This process is time-consuming and must be repeated regularly due to the rapid pace of model releases.

Proposed Solution

An automated agent that:

  1. Accepts natural language descriptions of use cases and constraints
  2. Assembles evaluation criteria based on user requirements
  3. Queries multiple data sources for comprehensive model information
  4. Applies configurable ranking logic with weighted scoring
  5. Generates transparent reports documenting methodology and data lineage

Use Cases

Primary: Agentic System Administration

  • Execute bash commands via natural language
  • Manage desktop environments and remote servers
  • File organization and manipulation
  • Video processing operations
  • System debugging and troubleshooting

Secondary: Development and Coding

  • Code generation and editing
  • Project management and debugging
  • Multi-file repository operations

Tertiary: Local Deployment Assessment

  • Evaluate models for local execution
  • Assess hardware compatibility
  • Compare local vs. cloud deployment options

System Architecture

  - Extract preferences and constraints
  - Analyze screenshots/annotations
    |
    v
Criteria Assembly Module
  - Generate exclusion criteria (must-haves)
  - Generate inclusion criteria (nice-to-haves)
  - Create weighted scoring system
    |
    v
Data Integration Layer
  - models.dev API (model database)
  - Hugging Face MCP (model cards & parameters)
  - SWE-Bench Integration (benchmarks & costs)
  - Search MCP (community feedback)
  - Model Provider APIs (pricing & capabilities)
    |
    v

  - Document methodology and scoring system
  - Include metadata (date, sources, confidence)
  - Provide lineage for decision-making

Evaluation Criteria

Must-Have Criteria (Exclusion)

  • Agentic Tool Calling: MCP support and tool usage API capabilities

Nice-to-Have Criteria (Inclusion)

  • Performance: Benchmark scores, task completion rates
  • Cost: API pricing, cost per completion, monthly usage estimates
  • Technical Specifications: Context window, knowledge cutoff, vision support
  • Deployment: Parameter count, quantization availability, hardware compatibility
  • Temporal: Release date, knowledge cutoff recency
  • Community: Reputation, use-case-specific feedback, adoption metrics

Data Sources

SourceTypeInformation Provided
models.devAPIComprehensive model database
SWE-BenchBenchmarkResolution percentage, average cost
Hugging FaceMCPModel cards, technical specifications
RedditSearchCommunity feedback, real-world experiences
Provider APIsAPICurrent pricing, capabilities

Implementation Options

Option 1: Research Agent

Accept user instructions, crawl benchmark sites, pull technical parameters, perform community research, generate research report with recommendations.

Option 2: Intelligent Ranking System

All Option 1 capabilities plus automatic scoring system generation, formal ranking methodology, weighted scoring with configurable parameters, comprehensive methodology documentation.

Example Workflow

User Input: "I need a model for system administration tasks - file management, bash commands, basic debugging. I want something cost-effective for daily use, approximately 80% as capable as the best models. I will retain Claude Opus for complex projects."

Agent Processing:

  1. Identifies must-have: Agentic tool calling
  2. Filters for cost-effective options
  3. Prioritizes models with good bash/command-line performance
  4. Checks community feedback for sysadmin use cases
  5. Provides ranked recommendations with cost estimates
