Agent Behavior Testing

skylos agent test evaluates a running agent, or captured agent observations,
against deterministic scenarios in .skylos/agent-test.yml.
The three verification surfaces answer different questions:

Quick Start
skylos agent init
skylos agent test --allow-contract-endpoint
skylos agent init safely creates .skylos/agent-test.yml. Live mode sends
each scenario to the configured OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions endpoint.
Offline mode evaluates normalized evidence without a network call:

Repository contributors can exercise the complete live path without a model by
running manual/agent_behavior/fake_server.py and then the contract documented
in manual/agent_behavior/README.md.

Version 1 checks exact response substrings, required/allowed/forbidden tool calls, recursive JSON argument subsets, exact tool sequence, maximum call count, explicit refusal evidence, and explicit source IDs.
Select endpoint trust and bearer-token authentication only from the trusted
command invocation. A contract may declare an unauthenticated loopback
endpoint, but Skylos will not call it unless the user supplies
--allow-contract-endpoint. Alternatively, override it explicitly:

Remote endpoints require HTTPS and --allow-remote. --auth-env requires an
explicit --endpoint. Redirects and URL-embedded credentials are rejected.
The report binds a canonical endpoint fingerprint, authentication presence,
and request limits without persisting the endpoint URL or bearer token.
Skylos never infers a refusal or citation from prose. Missing typed evidence is
incomplete, not pass. A live response also needs an explicit
finish_reason; length, content_filter, tool_calls, or a missing reason
cannot prove final-response, refusal, or source assertions. A tool_calls
finish can still prove the returned tool-call assertions. Tool assertions are
complete only for stop or tool_calls; truncated, filtered, or missing finish
evidence cannot prove that forbidden calls were absent.
Tool selection and final-answer source-ID checks are separate scenarios in the starter. The adapter records one Chat Completions response and does not execute the selected tool or submit its result in a second turn.
Offline Fixtures
Offline observations are deterministic fixture checks, not proof that a running endpoint produced the evidence:

Reports mark these as unverified_fixture and bind the fixture path and SHA-256
digest into the saved evidence. Do not combine --observations with live
endpoint or authentication flags. Omitted response_complete or
tool_calls_complete fields are unknown evidence, so corresponding assertions
remain incomplete.

Failure takes precedence over incomplete evidence. By default, a completed
evaluation writes secure local harness artifacts and behavior-results.json
under .skylos/runs/<run-id>. --no-artifacts disables persistence. If
requested artifacts cannot be written, a would-be pass becomes incomplete.
Replay validates the behavior report's digest against state, assertion
decisions, and the completion event. This detects missing, inconsistent, or
corrupt artifacts; the run directory is not signed and can be forged by an
actor able to rewrite every artifact consistently.
Behavior assertions are evaluated against the raw endpoint evidence. A separate
persistence copy redacts the exact bearer token selected by --auth-env if the
endpoint reflects it, so redaction cannot turn a violation into a pass. Other
secrets in prompts, responses, tool arguments, and source IDs are not
automatically identifiable and can be persisted in local artifacts.
Bound execution explicitly for CI or larger suites:

--max-scenarios and --max-seconds are enforced locally. --max-tokens is
sent as the endpoint's response-token limit; version 1 does not independently
retokenize arbitrary provider output, so a non-compliant endpoint is still
bounded by the separate response-byte limit. The effective scenario timeout is
also a monotonic deadline for the complete HTTP exchange, including a response
that keeps yielding small chunks.
Version 1 contracts are capped at 250 total assertions, and normalized
observations are capped at 250 returned tool calls per scenario. A complete
behavior-results.json report must fit the same 5,000,000-byte limit used by
replay; an oversized run is reported as incomplete instead of producing a pass
that cannot be replayed.
Version 1 Boundaries
- The OpenAI-compatible adapter observes final text and returned function tool calls; it never executes tools.
- A single scenario is one request/response turn; multi-turn tool execution is not orchestrated in version 1.
- Tool assertions require an explicit
message.tool_callsfield; omission is incomplete evidence, while[]ornullmeans no returned calls. - Refusal and source checks require explicit response fields.
- Hidden internal tool calls require exported observations or an agent-side observer.
- Semantic claim judging, source-content entailment, generated holdouts, cross-turn consistency, and an independent LLM judge are deferred.
