SkillRoute indexes and routes skill bundles. This page covers what that means for trust, what SkillRoute does and does not check, and how to close the gap.
Spec compliance is not a security check
skillroute validate checks bundles against the
Agent Skills specification: required frontmatter, structure,
naming, relationships. That is a correctness check.
A bundle can be perfectly valid and still be hostile:

That file passes skillroute validate --strict. Every required field is present and well-formed. The
problem is in the prose — which is exactly the part the model reads and follows.
The threat model
A SKILL.md body is instructions your agent obeys. That makes a skill library a supply chain, with
the same two failure modes as any other:

The second is the harder one, and it is invisible to indexing, routing, and validation alike: SkillRoute will happily keep routing to a skill whose instructions were rewritten last night.
Closing the gap with toolprint
toolprint is a trust gate for the text agents read. It
hashes each bundle — frontmatter and body — into a committed toolprint.lock, and scans the
prose for injection patterns.

A body-only edit is caught even though the skill's advertised identity never changed:

The two tools are complementary and do not overlap:

What SkillRoute itself does
SkillRoute gates its own MCP server and example skill library the same way. toolprint.lock is
committed at the repo root, and CI verifies it on every pull request:

If a tool description or a SKILL.md body changes, that job fails and the lockfile diff goes through
review before it merges. See the trust job in

Scanning the SkillRoute MCP server
SkillRoute's MCP server is a scan target like any other, so you can pin it in your own repo:

Local-first by default
- The catalog is a single SQLite file (
~/.skillroute/catalog.db) — nothing leaves your machine. - Routing, indexing, search, and harness setup are stdlib-only.
- The Astra DB backend is the one component that talks to a remote service, and it is opt-in. Credentials come from the environment; see that page.
