Why Multi-Step Tool-Use Reinforcement Learning Collapses and How Supervisory Signals Fix It

June 19, 2026 · View on GitHub

Tool-augmented reinforcement learning for function-calling agents, built on verl-tool and veRL.

This project extends verl-tool with process-level reward modeling, iterative SFT+RL evolution, hint-assisted training, and structural format debugging tools for multi-turn tool-use agents.

Key Features

  • Process-level reward modeling — LLM-judge analyzes multi-turn tool interactions, classifies errors, and generates augmentation data
  • Structural format diagnostics — Monitor tool-call format health during training to detect and prevent format collapse
  • Iterative evolution — RL training → reward model scoring → SFT distillation → next RL round
  • Multi-tool support — FCL, ToolACE, and custom tool interfaces via verl_tool's pluggable server architecture

See examples/train/fcl/README.md for the full evaluation script.
