Lists
A list in Python is an ordered, mutable (changeable) collection of items that can be of mixed types. Lists are one of the most versatile data structures in Python.
Characteristics
- Ordered: The order of elements is maintained.
- Mutable: You can add, remove, or change elements.
- Indexing and Slicing: Support for accessing elements by index and slicing.
Example
my_list = [1, 'hello', 3.14]
my_list.append(100) # Add an element
print(my_list[2]) # Access element (Outputs 3.14)
Tuples
A tuple is an ordered collection of items, similar to a list, but tuples are immutable (cannot be changed after creation). They are often used for data that shouldn't change after assignment.
Characteristics
- Ordered: Maintain the order of elements.
- Immutable: Cannot modify contents after creation.
- Useful for Fixed Data: Often used for data that doesn't need changing.
Example
my_tuple = (1, 'hello', 3.14)
print(my_tuple[1]) # Access element (Outputs 'hello')
Sets
A set in Python is an unordered collection of unique items. Sets are used when the existence of an item in a collection is more important than the order or how many times it occurs.
Characteristics
- Unordered: The order of elements is not guaranteed.
- Unique Elements: No duplicates are allowed.
- Mutable: You can add or remove items.
Example
my_set = {1, 2, 3, 2}
my_set.add(4) # Add an element
print(my_set) # Outputs {1, 2, 3, 4}
Dictionaries
A dictionary in Python is an unordered collection of items. Each item in a dictionary has a key-value pair. Dictionaries are optimized for retrieving data. They offer the fastest route to access the data.
Characteristics
- Unordered: The order of key-value pairs is not maintained.
- Key-Value Pairs: Data is stored as key-value pairs.
- Mutable: Keys and values can be changed.
Example
my_dict = {'name': 'Alice', 'age': 25}
my_dict['age'] = 26 # Update value
print(my_dict['name']) # Access value (Outputs 'Alice')
