Modules

A module in Python is a file containing Python definitions and statements. The file name is the module name with the suffix .py added. Modules in Python are used to organize code into manageable sections.

Creating a Module

To create a module, simply save your Python code into a file with a .py extension. For example, mymodule.py:

# mymodule.py
def greet(name):
    return f"Hello, {name}!"
Using a Module

You can use the functions or variables defined in a module by importing it into other modules or into the main module.

# Import the entire module
import mymodule
print(mymodule.greet("Alice"))

# Import a specific element
from mymodule import greet
print(greet("Bob"))

Packages

A package is a way of structuring Python’s module namespace by using “dotted module names”. A package is a directory that contains a file named __init__.py and can contain submodules and subpackages.

Creating a Package

To create a package, create a directory and add a file named __init__.py in it. This directory can then contain modules and other packages.

mypackage/
    __init__.py
    submodule1.py
    submodule2.py

Each submodule can have Python code, classes, functions, etc.

Using a Package

You can import modules from packages using the dot (.) notation.

# Importing a submodule
from mypackage import submodule1

# Importing a specific function from a submodule
from mypackage.submodule1 import my_function
