aide sync

aide sync [--context <name>] [--plan] [--yes]

Reconciles the declared plugins: and mcp_servers: sets for a context against what is installed in the agent. See Provisioning for the full model.

Flags:

  • --context <name>: operate on a specific context (default: match by CWD).
  • --plan: print the plan, exit without mutating state.
  • --yes: non-interactive (skip confirmation).

State is persisted to ~/.local/state/aide/managed.json atomically and only on full success. On any failure, the engine rolls back via an in-memory inverse journal.

aide adopt

aide adopt [--context <name>] [--yes]

Walks agent-installed but undeclared plugins / MCP servers / marketplaces and prompts to add them to config.yaml, then records them as managed in state. Use this to bring a hand-installed setup under aide management.

Flags:

  • --context <name>: defaults to current-CWD match.
  • --yes: accept everything without prompting.

aide plugin

aide plugin list

aide plugin list [--context <name>]

Three-column view (declared / installed / managed) per context. For marketplace-class agents, includes a MARKETPLACES section first with the agent's canonical marketplace name and any installed-but-unmanaged entries flagged as unmanaged.

aide mcp

aide mcp list

aide mcp list [--context <name>]

Three-column view (declared / installed / managed) for MCP servers. Same shape as aide plugin list.

aide hook

aide hook list

aide hook list [--context <name>]

Shows hooks declared in config.yaml for the context, with a MANAGED column indicating whether the hook is currently written to the agent's config. The list is sourced from the config file, not from the agent's live state, so it reflects what aide knows about rather than what the agent actually runs.

Flags:

  • --context <name>: operate on a specific context (default: match by CWD).

aide hook add

aide hook add --event <event> --command <cmd> [--matcher <matcher>] [--timeout <seconds>] [--context <name>]

Appends a hook entry to config.yaml under the context's hooks.extra block. Does not write anything to the agent: run aide sync to apply.

Flags:

  • --event <event>: hook event (required): pre_tool, post_tool, session_start, session_end, notification, stop.
  • --command <cmd>: shell command to run (required). Shell metacharacters (;|&\$(){}` etc.) are rejected to prevent injection.
  • --matcher <matcher>: narrow the hook to a tool class (optional). shell targets the Bash/shell tool only (mapped to the agent's native name, e.g. Bash for Claude).
  • --timeout <seconds>: override the agent default timeout (optional, 0 = driver default).
  • --context <name>: defaults to CWD match.

aide hook remove

aide hook remove --event <event> --command <cmd> [--matcher <matcher>] [--context <name>]

Removes the matching hook entry from config.yaml. Does not touch the agent until you run aide sync.

Flags mirror hook add. The hook is identified by the (event, matcher, command) triple: all three must match the entry to remove.

aide config

aide config show

aide config show

Prints the contents of the config file with its path as a header.

aide config show

aide config edit

aide config edit

Opens the config file in $EDITOR (falls back to $VISUAL, then vi). Validates the config after saving.

aide config edit

aide statusline

aide statusline [agent]

aide statusline [agent] [flags]
aide statusline claude [flags]

Renders the current aide session state as a compact statusline string for use with a coding agent's statusline feature (e.g. Claude Code's statusLine setting). Reads session state from AIDE_* environment variables injected by aide before exec. claude is currently the only agent with rendering support; any other resolved agent name (explicit --agent, positional argument, or AIDE_AGENT) returns an error instead of silently rendering.

Piped mode (when stdin is a pipe: a coding agent's invocation path):

  1. Reads all of stdin (JSON from the invoking agent).
  2. Reads AIDE_* env vars for session state.
  3. Loads merged config (~/.config/aide/config.yaml โ†’ .aide.yaml).
  4. Walks the configured module order, renders each active module to a string.
  5. Joins with | and writes to stdout.

TTY mode (when stdin is a terminal: a human previewing the statusline directly): stdin is not read at all in this mode. Since there's no aide-launched session to read real AIDE_* env vars from, TTY mode instead simulates one: it resolves the CWD-matched aide context and computes what a real aide launch would set (sandbox, network, capabilities, trust, auto-approve) without actually launching: no secret decryption, no interactive capability-variant prompts. The agent is resolved via --agent/positional argument, AIDE_AGENT, the aide context matched to the current working directory, or claude as the final default.

--context <name> forces this same simulation for an explicitly named context, in both TTY and piped mode: useful for checking what the statusline would look like under a context other than the one CWD would match. Errors if the name doesn't exist. Unlike the CWD-matched TTY case, a named context is looked up directly with no .aide.yaml project-override merge (matching aide cap list/aide cap audit's treatment of a named context). When --agent isn't also given, the agent comes from the named context's own configuration.

Bare aide statusline (no positional argument, no --agent, no --context) auto-detects the agent: AIDE_AGENT when set (an aide-launched session), otherwise the shape of piped stdin JSON identifies Claude Code, otherwise (TTY only) the CWD-matched aide context's configured agent, otherwise claude.

FlagDescription
--agent <name>Coding agent to render for (default: auto-detected)
--module <name>Render only this module; repeatable (--module sandbox --module network). Valid names: sandbox, network, caps, trust, context, auto_approve. An unrecognized name is an error, not a silently blank widget.
--installPatch the target context's settings.json to set statusLine.command
--removeClear the statusLine key from the target context's settings.json
--context <name>For --install/--remove: target a specific aide context (default: matched by CWD), resolving the correct CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR for profile-based contexts automatically. For render mode: preview that context's simulated session instead of the CWD-matched one, in both TTY and piped mode.

Install behaviour:

Existing statusLine.commandAction
Not setSet to "aide statusline claude"
"aide statusline claude"No-op; prints confirmation
Anything elseGenerate ~/.config/aide/statusline-wrapper.sh that pipes stdin to both the existing command and aide; update settings to point to wrapper

Sample output:

๐Ÿ”’ | ๐ŸŒ | โšก k8s,docker # sandbox on, outbound, caps active
๐Ÿ”’ | ๐ŸŒ | โšก none | โš ๏ธ # untrusted .aide.yaml
๐Ÿšจ | ๐Ÿ”“ | ๐ŸŒ | โšก none # auto-approve on, sandbox off, unrestricted
aide statusline claude --install # one-time setup (CWD-matched context)
aide statusline claude --install --context work # install for a specific context
aide statusline claude --remove # undo
