Code of Conduct

Our Pledge

The Maptoolkit.org community exists to help people build great maps on top of open data and open-source software. We want this to be a place where anyone — beginners and veterans, hobbyists and professionals — can ask questions, share work, and get help without fear of being mocked, harassed, or talked down to.

By participating in this project (Discussions, Issues, Pull Requests, or any other channel tied to this repository) you agree to follow this Code of Conduct.

Our Standards

Behaviour that helps the community thrive:

  • Be respectful. Treat others the way you would want to be treated.
  • Be welcoming. Assume good intent. Remember everyone was a beginner once.
  • Be constructive. When pointing out a problem, suggest a path forward.
  • Be patient. People answering you are often volunteers — and English may not be everyone's first language.
  • Give credit. Acknowledge other people's work, ideas, and code.
  • Stay on topic. Keep discussions relevant to maps, Maptoolkit, OpenStreetMap, MapLibre and related tooling.

Behaviour that is not acceptable:

  • Personal attacks, insults, name-calling, or derogatory remarks.
  • Harassment of any kind, public or private — including unwelcome contact after someone has asked you to stop.
  • Discriminatory language or jokes based on gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, neurotype, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, nationality, race, age, religion, or any other protected characteristic.
  • Sexualised language or imagery; unwelcome sexual attention or advances.
  • Trolling, deliberately disruptive comments, or flame wars.
  • Posting other people's private information (doxxing) without explicit permission.
  • Publishing or threatening violence.
  • Spam, off-topic advertising, or repeated self-promotion.
  • Sustained disruption of discussions, talks, or other events.

Scope

This Code of Conduct applies to all project spaces — GitHub Discussions, Issues, Pull Requests, code comments, commit messages, and any other channel maintained by this repository. It also applies when an individual is officially representing the project in public spaces.

Enforcement

If you experience or witness behaviour that violates this Code of Conduct, please report it privately to the maintainers via the contact details on maptoolkit.org. Reports will be handled discreetly.

Maintainers may take any action they consider appropriate, including:

  1. A private warning, with an explanation of why the behaviour was inappropriate.
  2. A public warning.
  3. Editing or removing comments, commits, code, issues, pull requests, or other contributions.
  4. Temporary or permanent ban from one or more project spaces.

Maintainers who do not enforce this Code in good faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other members of the project's leadership.

Attribution

This Code of Conduct is inspired by the Contributor Covenant, version 2.1.
