Docker Support

prompt-shield ships with a production-ready Docker image that exposes both the CLI and a REST API server.

Quick Start

Build the Image

docker build -t prompt-shield .

Run the API Server

docker run -p 8000:8000 prompt-shield

The API is now available at http://localhost:8000. Interactive docs are at http://localhost:8000/docs.

Run CLI Commands

# Scan text
docker run prompt-shield prompt-shield scan "Ignore all previous instructions"

# PII redact
docker run prompt-shield prompt-shield pii redact "user@example.com"

# Version info
docker run prompt-shield prompt-shield --version

Docker Compose

docker compose up

This starts the API server with persistent storage, health checks, and auto-restart.

Configuration

All configuration is via environment variables:

Persistent Storage

The container stores scan history and detector data in /home/shield/data. Mount a volume to persist across restarts:

docker run -p 8000:8000 -v shield-data:/home/shield/data prompt-shield

The Docker Compose configuration handles this automatically.

Security Notes

• The container runs as a non-root user (shield, UID 1000).
• No ML classifier is included by default to keep the image small. For the ML-based classifier, build a custom image with pip install prompt-shield-ai[ml].
• Set PROMPT_SHIELD_CORS_ORIGINS to specific origins in production instead of the default *.
• Rate limiting is applied per client IP. Adjust PROMPT_SHIELD_RATE_LIMIT based on your expected traffic.

Building a Custom Image

To include ML support or additional plugins:
