This document tracks significant changes, feature implementations, and architectural decisions made throughout the development of the YouTube Transcript MCP Server.
Feature: Dual Chapter Markers Display (Latest)
Background
While the original chapter markers implementation integrated chapters into the transcript text, users wanted a way to quickly see all chapters before diving into the transcript content. To enhance usability, we implemented a dual display approach for chapter markers.
Implementation
The enhanced chapter markers feature now displays chapter information in two places:
- As a complete list at the top of the transcript output, immediately after the video metadata
- Integrated inline within the transcript text at appropriate timestamps (as implemented previously)
This dual approach gives users both an overview of the video structure and contextual chapter transitions when reading the transcript.
Key Components Added/Modified
-
Functions in transcript_mcp.py:
- Modified
get_transcriptto display the complete list of chapter markers at the top
- Modified
-
Test Files:
- Added

Development Guidelines
- Run scripts with python3: Updated documentation to emphasize using
python3to run scripts rather than making them executable - Thorough testing: Added new test script to verify the feature works correctly
Learnings
- User Experience: Providing multiple ways to view the same information caters to different user needs and workflows
- Documentation Importance: Clear documentation of both features and development practices improves contributor onboarding
- Code Organization: Minimizing changes to core library functions while enhancing MCP layer maintained clean separation of concerns
Feature: Video Statistics Implementation (Latest)
Background
The original implementation of the YouTube Transcript MCP Server focused on basic transcript retrieval with minimal metadata. To enhance the user experience and provide more comprehensive information about videos, we implemented a video statistics feature.
Implementation
The video statistics feature extracts additional information from YouTube videos:
- View count
- Like count
- Upload date
This information is presented alongside the basic metadata and can be requested separately through a dedicated tool.
Key Components Added
-
Functions in transcript_lib.py:
get_video_statistics(): Extracts view count, likes, and upload date from a video's page
-
Tools in transcript_mcp.py:

- Added
Learnings
- Data Extraction Challenges: Extracting statistics from YouTube's page requires careful parsing and is subject to page structure changes.
- Error Handling: Not all statistics are available for all videos (e.g., some videos have hidden like counts), requiring robust error handling.
- User Value: Video statistics provide important context for users who want to evaluate the relevance and popularity of content.
Feature: Chapter Markers Integration
Background
YouTube videos often include chapters that divide content into logical sections. We implemented chapter marker extraction to enhance the transcript experience by providing structural context alongside the transcript text.
Implementation
The chapter markers feature identifies chapters defined by the video creator and integrates them into the transcript output. Each chapter includes:
- A title
- A timestamp
- Proper formatting and placement within the transcript
Key Components Added
-
Functions in transcript_lib.py:
get_chapter_markers(): Extracts chapter markers from a video's page- Enhanced
format_transcript_text()to integrate chapters with transcript
-
Tools in transcript_mcp.py:
- Added

- Added
Learnings
- Format Usability: Integrating chapters directly into the transcript text with clear formatting significantly improves navigation and readability.
- Content Structure: Chapter markers provide semantic structure to long-form content, helping users understand the organization of videos.
- Reliability Considerations: Not all videos have chapter markers, requiring graceful fallbacks and clear messaging.
Feature: Speaker Identification (Implemented & Later Removed)
Background
For interviews, panel discussions, and other multi-speaker content, we attempted to implement speaker identification to distinguish between different speakers in transcripts.
Implementation (Initial)
The speaker identification feature used pattern matching to identify potential speakers in YouTube transcripts, looking for common formats like "Speaker:", "[Speaker]", or "(Speaker)" at the beginning of transcript segments.
Key Components Added (Later Removed)
-
Functions in transcript_lib.py:
identify_speakers(): Identified potential speakers using pattern matchingformat_transcript_with_speakers(): Formatted transcripts with speaker labels
-
Tools in transcript_mcp.py:
- Added
identify_transcript_speakerstool - Enhanced
get_transcriptto support speaker identification
- Added
-
Test Files:
- Added
test_speaker_identification.py - Added
test_with_sample_data.pyfor pattern testing
- Added
Decision to Remove
After implementation and testing, the speaker identification feature was found to be ineffective for the following reasons:
-
Limited Accuracy: The pattern-matching approach could only identify speakers in transcripts that already had explicit speaker labels, making the functionality largely redundant.
-
Inconsistent Format Support: The variety of formats used to denote speakers in YouTube transcripts made it difficult to create a reliable pattern-matching system.
-
Low Value-Add: The feature did not provide significant value beyond what users could already see in properly formatted transcripts.
-
Complexity: The speaker identification code added complexity to the codebase without providing proportionate benefits.
Architectural Changes for Removal
The following changes were made to remove the speaker identification functionality:
-
Removed Components:
identify_speakers()andformat_transcript_with_speakers()functionsidentify_transcript_speakerstool- Speaker identification options from
get_transcripttool - Test files:
test_speaker_identification.pyandtest_with_sample_data.py
-
Simplified Architecture:
- Focused on core features: transcript retrieval, chapter markers, and metadata/statistics
- Updated class diagram and sequence diagram in README
Learnings
- Prototype Early: Early testing with real-world examples could have revealed the limitations before full implementation.
- Focus on Core Value: The core value proposition of well-formatted transcripts with metadata and chapters remains robust.
- Consider Requirements Carefully: True speaker identification would require more sophisticated approaches like audio analysis.
- Maintain Simplicity: Removing unnecessary features simplified the codebase, making it more maintainable.
Feature: Fact-Checking Integration (Latest)
Background
As users increasingly rely on AI systems like Claude to analyze video content, there's a growing need for tools that help verify information presented in videos. To address this need, we implemented a fact-checking feature that enables Claude to verify claims made in YouTube videos.
Implementation
The fact-checking feature provides a set of deterministic tools for Claude to use when verifying claims:
- Search integration for finding verification information
- Transcript segment extraction for analyzing specific parts of videos
- Claim finding through exact and fuzzy matching
The implementation follows a key design principle: keeping the MCP server purely deterministic while allowing Claude to perform all AI-based analysis and reasoning.
Key Components Added
-
New Files:
search_api.py: Client for web search API integrationtranscript_segment.py: Utilities for transcript segment extraction and claim findingtest_fact_checking.py: Test script for the fact-checking featuredocs/fact_checking_design.md: Detailed design documentation
-
New MCP Tools in transcript_mcp.py:
search_for_claim_verification(): Searches for information about claimsextract_transcript_segment(): Extracts transcript segments around timestampsfind_claim_in_transcript(): Locates specific claims in transcripts
-
Architectural Changes:
- Added modular search client with API-agnostic design
- Implemented fuzzy matching for claim identification
- Added support for environment-based configuration
Development Guidelines
- API Key Management: Search API keys are managed via environment variables
- Result Formatting: Search results are structured as JSON for Claude to parse
- Error Handling: Comprehensive error handling for search API limitations and failures
Architectural Decisions
-
Separation of Concerns:
- MCP Server: Provides deterministic tools for data retrieval and processing
- Claude: Performs all LLM-based analysis, summarization, and fact-checking
- Search API: Modular component with clear interface for future expansion
-
Search Integration Approach:
- Selected Serper.dev as the default search provider due to its reliability and structure
- Designed search client to be easily adaptable to other providers
- Implemented structured result formatting optimized for Claude's analysis
-
Transcript Analysis:
- Created dedicated utilities for transcript segment extraction
- Implemented timestamp conversion functions
- Added fuzzy matching for more flexible claim finding
Learnings
-
Deterministic Boundaries: Maintaining a clear boundary between the deterministic MCP server and Claude's AI capabilities ensures a clean architecture that leverages the strengths of both components.
-
Search Quality Impact: The quality of fact-checking results depends significantly on the search provider and query formulation. Implementing a dual-search approach (direct query + "fact check" prefixed query) yields more comprehensive results.
-
Context Matters: Providing sufficient context around claims is crucial for accurate verification. The segment extraction tool with configurable context window addresses this need.
-
Fuzzy Matching Value: Exact claim matching often fails due to variations in wording. Fuzzy matching based on word overlap significantly improves claim location success rates.
-
JSON Formatting: Structured JSON results make it easier for Claude to analyze and reason about verification data compared to text-only responses.
-
Modularity Benefits: The modular design with separate files for search and segment extraction makes the codebase more maintainable and allows for focused testing of each component.
