deviceterm itself is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. See LICENSE.

deviceterm is distributed as a macOS application bundle. Entries below identify either components redistributed within that bundle or upstream work acknowledged by deviceterm. Each entry states the applicable relationship and license, and each remains under its own terms rather than deviceterm's.

Corresponding source

deviceterm is licensed under the GPL, so the source for everything in the app bundle is published at https://github.com/sethdeckard/deviceterm. Each bundle records the commit it was built from in its Info.plist as DTSourceCommit. The About window shows that commit in its Commit row.

libghostty arrives as a prebuilt binary, so recovering its source takes one more step. Package.swift pins an exact version of https://github.com/sethdeckard/libghostty-spm. That tag's GHOSTTY_VERSION file names the Ghostty commit the binary was compiled from, and the same two lines appear in the notes of the matching GitHub release. Its first line is a git describe and can move when upstream retags, so use the commit line. Ghostty's build.zig.zon, together with the nested pkg/*/build.zig.zon manifests, pins every library named below by URL and content hash.

The source-availability terms in the sections below are met this way, by publication, rather than by written offer.

Five statically linked components are licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0:

None of the five ships a NOTICE file, so there is no NOTICE text to carry forward.

Ghostty vendors modified copies of three Highway sources — hwy/targets.cc, hwy/abort.cc and hwy/per_target.cc — into pkg/highway/src/cpp/. The changes drop upstream CPU feature probing for Ghostty's own target detection and remove a libc-backed diagnostic path. Each file names in its header the upstream commit it came from and what was changed, which is the record of changes the license asks for. The other four are used as published. deviceterm modifies none of them.

glslang should not be called Apache-2.0 without qualification. Its license file combines BSD 3-clause, BSD 2-clause, MIT and Apache-2.0 terms across different parts of the project, along with a GPL-3 section carrying a bison exception that applies to generated parser files current glslang no longer contains. That file ships at Contents/Resources/licenses/glslang-LICENSE.txt.

simdutf's amalgamated header includes one file adapted from Torch, internal/isadetection.h, under BSD 3-clause. Its notice appears in the Breakpad section below with the other BSD 3-clause notices.

Breakpad — transitive dependency (via Ghostty)

Ghostty links Google Breakpad's macOS crash-reporting client (https://chromium.googlesource.com/breakpad/breakpad). Google's own code is BSD 3-clause, Copyright 2006 Google LLC. The macOS client is not BSD 3-clause throughout: two files under other terms compile into the binary deviceterm ships.

The Regents notice is the original four-clause BSD, not the three-clause form. Its third condition requires that advertising material mentioning features or use of the software display an acknowledgement of the University of California, Berkeley and its contributors. The University withdrew that clause from its BSD-licensed code in 1999, and this file is copyright The Regents, so the condition is not one deviceterm carries forward. It is reproduced here because the text that ships still states it:

The MPL's copyleft is per-file. It covers z2d's own source files and reaches nothing else in deviceterm, and combining those files with a larger work under other terms is what the license allows.

For a binary distribution the MPL asks that recipients be told how to get the source form of the covered files and how to get the license. The exact z2d in any deviceterm build is pinned by URL and content hash in Ghostty's build.zig.zon at the commit named in GHOSTTY_VERSION, which Corresponding source above explains how to find. Upstream is https://github.com/vancluever/z2d. The license ships at Contents/Resources/licenses/MPL-2.0.txt and is at https://mozilla.org/MPL/2.0/

deviceterm modifies no z2d file. The version Ghostty pins ships no license file of its own, carrying the MPL identification in SPDX headers inside its sources, so this notice is where it is reproduced.

GNU libintl — transitive dependency (via Ghostty)

Ghostty links GNU gettext's runtime message-lookup library, libintl. Copyright (C) 1995-2025 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 or later. Ghostty builds it from the upstream sources with its own build configuration and does not modify the library sources; neither does deviceterm.

This section is the notice the LGPL asks for: libintl is used in deviceterm, and libintl and its use are covered by the LGPL. A copy of the license ships at Contents/Resources/licenses/LGPL-2.1.txt and is at https://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/lgpl-2.1.txt

The LGPL lets a work that only links the library ship under other terms, provided recipients can modify the library and relink the work against their version. deviceterm meets that by publication, not by offer. The route is:

  1. Take the deviceterm source at the commit the bundle records in DTSourceCommit, from https://github.com/sethdeckard/deviceterm
  2. Read the libghostty-spm version pinned in its Package.swift, then read GHOSTTY_VERSION at that tag for the Ghostty commit.
  3. Rebuild GhosttyKit.xcframework from that libghostty-spm tag with scripts/build-xcframework.sh, substituting your libintl for the one Ghostty's pkg/libintl fetches by hash.
  4. Point deviceterm's Package.swift at your framework and rebuild. scripts/make-app-bundle.sh assembles the bundle.

Nothing on that path is withheld. "Or later" also keeps the combination clean, since LGPL-2.1-or-later can be taken as LGPL-3.0, which is compatible with GPLv3.

Ghostty shell integration — transitive dependency (via Ghostty)

Ghostty's shell integration scripts ship in libghostty's resource tree, which deviceterm redistributes twice inside the app bundle: once inside libghostty's own resource bundle, and once flattened to Contents/Resources/ghostty/ghostty/shell-integration/. The repeated path segment there is not a typo — the copied tree keeps Ghostty's own directory layout inside a directory already named ghostty. Three of those files are licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later:

  • shell-integration/bash/ghostty.bash — GPL-3.0-or-later
  • shell-integration/zsh/ghostty-integration — GPL-3.0-or-later
  • shell-integration/zsh/.zshenv — GPL-3.0-or-later

Each began as, or borrows from, Kitty's shell integration (https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty), which is distributed under GPLv3. Each says so in its own header and reproduces the GPL notice there, and deviceterm ships those headers unaltered. Copyright in the Kitty-derived material remains with the Kitty authors and in Ghostty's additions with the Ghostty authors. Neither project states a copyright line in these files, so none is stated here.

The GPL's source requirement for them is self-satisfying: they ship as source, which is the form preferred for modifying them, and nothing is compiled from them. The requirement that a copy of the license accompany them is met by deviceterm's own LICENSE, the complete text of GPLv3, which ships in every bundle at Contents/Resources/LICENSE. libghostty also places a copy beside the scripts themselves at shell-integration/GPL-3.0.txt.

deviceterm is licensed under GPL-3.0-or-later, so these files ask nothing of it that its own license does not already ask. They appear here because deviceterm redistributes them. They reach nothing else in it: the user's shell sources them, and no part of deviceterm links against them.
