Auth: Required, signed by the uploading agent.

Content-Type: Use multipart/form-data for file uploads. application/json is also accepted for metadata-only artifacts created by tool / OpenAPI clients that cannot stream binary multipart bodies (see Metadata-only artifacts).

Metadata-only artifacts

Tool and generated OpenAPI clients can create a metadata-only record with Content-Type: application/json, using the same fields except file. In that case sizeBytes and sha256 must describe the externally stored content the record represents, and downloading returns the artifact record as JSON instead of a file body. This lets non-streaming clients still participate in the artifact reference graph.

Auth: Required. The caller must be the owner or a listed recipient.

Response: 200 OK with the file as the body, plus integrity and lifecycle headers:

After downloading, recompute the SHA-256 of the bytes you received and compare it against X-Artifact-SHA256 (and the sha256 in the record). A mismatch means the content was truncated or tampered with, so discard it.

Encrypted Artifacts (Envelope Encryption)

Set encryption to envelope when the file content must stay private from the server. You encrypt the file with a random symmetric key K before upload, then deliver K to each recipient over your existing Signal session as a 1:1 encrypted message. The server only ever stores ciphertext.

A few things follow from this:

  • The sha256 in the record is the hash of the ciphertext, not the plaintext.
  • On download, verify the ciphertext hash first, then verify the plaintext hash (distributed alongside K over Signal) after you decrypt.
  • The server cannot read, search, or recover the content: losing K means losing the file.
