Authentication

To use the API, you need to authenticate yourself. This can be done via HTTP POST or HTTP Basic Auth. After successful authentication a session is created using a cookie.

In the current API implementation and for this documentation, the "username" is simply the user's email.

For HTTP Basic Auth you have to add the Authorization header with the request. The Authorization header is constructed as follows:

• Username and password are combined into a string username:password or if you use the api token it should be combined xxxx:api_token (xxx indicating user's personal token)
• The resulting string literal is then encoded using Base64
• The authorization method and a space i.e. "Basic " is then put before the encoded string.
• For example, if the user agent uses 'Aladdin' as the username and 'open sesame' as the password then the header is formed as follows: Authorization: Basic QWxhZGRpbjpvcGVuIHNlc2FtZQ==

If authentication fails, HTTP status code 403 is returned.

HTTP Basic Auth with API token

When using Basic Auth and API token, use the API token as username and string "api_token" as password.

Authentication with a session cookie

POST https://api.track.toggl.com/api/v8/sessions

It's possible to create a session. The session creation request sets a cookie in the response header __Host-timer-session, which you can use for authentication in all the API requests.

Destroy the session

Destroy the session manually by sending an according request to the API.
